Overview

Working as part of a team subcontracting for a major contractor, we have an opportunity for an apprentice to be involved in all aspects of Site Carpentry while studying towards a Level 2 qualification. Initially on a Tunbridge Wells site, with a view to moving to additional sites as the team grows. The placement provides hands-on experience in first and second fix carpentry, focusing on flooring at first, then expanding to other carpentry and joinery tasks. An Apprenticeship programme with day release at college in Croydon will support the on-site training.

Responsibilities
  • Assist skilled carpenters and joiners in woodworking tasks and learn from experienced tradespeople
  • Select the required materials, tools, and fixings for the work
  • Measure, mark, cut, finish, and install first fix components (joists, roofing, door frames, window boards, linings, partitions, mouldings)
  • Measure, mark, cut, finish, and install second fix components (doors, staircases, skirting/architraves, kitchens, cladding, decking, finals)
  • Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings and work to specifications
  • Take measurements, calculate material quantities, and plan work to required quality and efficiency
  • Use hand tools, portable power tools and equipment safely
  • Follow health, safety and welfare policies; wear PPE where required
  • Maintain a clean and organised work environment
  • Move, handle and store materials in compliance with relevant legislation
  • Follow verbal and written instructions from supervisors and site managers
  • Uphold high standards of craftsmanship and attention to detail
  • May assist in other areas of the site (e.g., cleaning and general labouring)
  • Opportunities to observe other trades to learn project sequencing
  • Identify and use safety control equipment (RPE, dust suppression, PPE, LEV)
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards and guidance; segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal
  • Prepare and maintain a safe working area
  • Interpret information from drawings and specifications; produce cutting lists and estimate required materials
  • Communicate verbally with others using construction terminology
  • Select, use and store hand tools and power tools; maintain and sharpen hand tools
  • Produce jigs and identify well-being support for self and others
Apprenticeship details

Training & Apprenticeships in Construction Ltd (TrAC) is a DfE approved Flexi Job Apprenticeship Agency. TrAC will employ you for the duration of the apprenticeship and place you with a host employer. Your placement may change during the apprenticeship, but you will remain employed by TrAC with ongoing support into employment or further learning at the end of the apprenticeship.
