Job description
Overview

An exciting opportunity to join the clinical pharmacy team at Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals as part of a new service. You will work closely with pre-assessment services and clinics at the Royal Victoria Infirmary to ensure patients' medicines are reviewed in a timely and appropriate manner prior to admission for elective procedures. You will engage with multiple surgical specialties across the Trust and work with a team of experienced Pharmacists and technicians to provide clinical Pharmacy support to areas where patients attend for planned surgery and procedures.

You will have the opportunity to build experience and expertise in a wide variety of clinical settings and will be expected to attend multidisciplinary meetings where appropriate. You will help support senior pharmacy staff in promoting the safe, effective and economic use of medicines via audit and guideline development, as well as providing support and training to nursing staff, Pharmacy Technicians, junior Pharmacists and students.

As a GPhC registered Pharmacy Technician you will work autonomously, referring to senior colleagues when required. You will use professional judgement to make decisions, and the role will include elements of staff and student management as well as education and training.

Responsibilities
  • Lead implementation and delivery of a coordinated, highly effective Pharmacy service within pre-assessment and day of surgery settings.
  • Provide peri-operative support to pre-assessment units.
  • Develop clinical guidelines and conduct audits.
  • Perform medicines reconciliation and support discharge facilitation.
  • Mentor/support junior Pharmacists, Technicians and students.
  • Act as a key contact for other Pharmacy staff in the area and be a specialist within the practice area.
  • Provide an advanced level clinical pharmacy service in line with Pharmacy KPIs and agreed clinical standards.
  • Prioritise patients within the specialty using informed decision making and professional judgement in line with Trust initiatives and procedures.
  • Provide ongoing clinical support and guidance to pharmacy colleagues and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Assist senior colleagues in ensuring medication safety and clinical governance issues are actions and implemented promptly.
  • Support flexible working arrangements where possible to meet service needs and patient care.
Qualifications
  • GPhC registered Pharmacy Technician.
  • Ability to work autonomously with professional judgement and to seek guidance from senior colleagues as required.
  • Experience in education, training or mentoring junior staff and students is desirable.
