We are looking for a senior executive / expert with extensive insights on the future of rail (manufacturing, installation, management, performance, costs, and maintenance), for a short-term consultancy to support a forward-looking strategic assessment of rail-welding technologies, with a strong focus on future disruptions and regulatory change.

Scope of work
  • Expected technological disruptions in rail (manufacturing, exploitaiton, welding, track maintenance) to 2035 and 2050.
  • Evolution of rail materials and implications for welding processes and standards.
  • Shifts in operational models, including reduced track possession time, maintenance under traffic, and system-level optimisation.
  • How total cost of ownership, availability constraints and network capacity pressures may reshape welding decisions.
  • Regulatory and normative trends affecting ATW, FBW and alternative techniques, including safety, certification, ESG and reporting requirements.
  • Impact of sustainability regulation (scope 3, reporting obligations, due diligence) on technology choice and supplier selection.
Profile sought
  • 15 plus years of experience in track engineering, system management, infrastructure strategy, rail manufacturing, welding, or rail maintenance.
  • Proven ability to analyse future trends, not only current practices.
  • Strong understanding of standards, regulation and infrastructure or operator decision-making.
  • Ability to articulate structured, independent views on long-term risks and opportunities.
