Offer Description

MXenes are single or multilayer two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides and are widely recognized as one of the fastest growing areas in 2D materials research due to their exceptional physical and structural properties and great promise for various applications, including energy storage, supercapacitors, gas sensors and photovoltaics.

The goal of the PhD program is to perform systematic experimental and theoretical study exploring the tunability of 2D MXenes in the compositional row Ti2CTz – Ti2CxNyTz – Ti2NTz and discover the role of C, N, and functional groups Tz on the electronic structure and properties.

The PhD project tackles the following tasks:

  • i/ chemical synthesis of Ti2CTz – Ti2CxNyTz – Ti2NTz MXenes
  • ii/ structural, morphological, and physico-chemical characterization of exfoliated materials
  • iii/ identification of stable carbonitride MXene configuration via first-principle simulation and theoretical prediction of their electronic structure
  • iv/ study of electrochemical and optoelectronic properties of developed materials
