The Tukwila Police Department (TPD) is hiring certified lateral police officers to join our 77‑commissioned officer force. Applicants must be a certified officer and meet Washington State’s licensure and experience requirements.
Responsibilities
- Investigate criminal activity, gather evidence, and interview witnesses.
- Enforce traffic and parking regulations, conduct traffic stops and accident investigations.
- Perform law‑enforcement duties, including lawful search, seizure, and arrest.
- Provide judicial assistance: testify in court, prepare reports, maintain records.
- Assist with administrative and supervisory tasks and public‑relations activities.
- Operate and maintain firearms, patrol vehicles, and motor‑vehicle equipment.
- Complete special detail work as assigned, including shift and foot patrols.
- Respond to and investigate citizen complaints and maintain public service.
Qualifications & Requirements
- MUST BE A CERTIFIED OFFICER TO APPLY.
- Minimum of 24 months full‑time municipal, county, state, or federal agency experience, with 12 months after academy.
- Successful completion of a field training program (FTO / PTO) for lateral applicants.
- Valid Washington State driver’s license without a record of suspension or revocation.
- Citizen of the United States or lawful permanent resident with English proficiency.
- Basic 21‑year age requirement at hire.
- Background check, polygraph, mental and medical exams required.
- Physical ability to pass the Physical Agility Test and perform required tasks.
Training, Experience & Licensing
- High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a WSCJTC‑approved police academy.
- Certification with the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.
- Experience as a full‑time commissioned officer on a municipal, county, state or federal agency for >24 months in the last 36 months.
- Field Training Program completion for lateral entry.
- Completion of National Incident Management System (ICS) and NIMS courses is preferred.

Civil Service Testing & Application Process
- Complete online application with resume, transcript, academy certificates, and a memo to the Chief of Police.
- Submit required documents: DD‑214 for veterans, driver’s license, and academy certification.
- Participate in a telephone interview, written exam (Public Safety Testing), background investigation, polygraph, psychological exams, and a medical exam.
- Receive result and invitation to interview stage.
