Summary: Be part of the Southern Health-Sant Sud team providing resident/patient support with a person-centred approach in accordance with established standards of practice and legislative requirements.
Position Overview
Under the leadership of the Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Registered Psychiatric Nurse as team leaders, the Health Care Aide (HCA) provides support and assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) as identified in the care plan. The HCA works to the full scope of practice and engages in education and certifications to maintain competency. Person-centred care is provided according to Accreditation Canada Standards, Personal Care Home Standards, and legislative requirements.
The incumbent uses appropriate initiative and independent judgment to determine priorities, work methods, and actions on unusual matters. The position aligns with the mission, vision, values, and policies of Southern Health-Sant Sud.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include supporting residents/patients with ADLs, following the care plan, and ensuring safety and dignity in daily routines. The HCA collaborates with nursing staff and participates in ongoing education to maintain competency. Work is performed in accordance with organisational standards and legal requirements.
Experience
- One to two (1-2) years experience in a health care setting preferred.
- One to two (1-2) years experience preferably caring for elderly or disabled clients preferred.
Education (Degree / Diploma / Certificate)
- Grade 12 education required or equivalent.
- Health Care Aide Certificate from recognized program.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Certification / Licensure / Registration
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Acute Care).
- Stated certification in basic emergency response (as applicable to role).
Qualifications and Skills
- Proficiency of both official languages is essential (English / French).
- Knowledge of Confidentiality / privacy requirements following PHIA and FIPPA legislation.
- Knowledge of Workplace safety requirements (WHMIS).
- Knowledge of Violence Prevention Program (VPP) training and processes.
- Knowledge of SCHIPP training and processes.
- Ability to organize and prioritize workload, work well in a team, and communicate effectively (verbal and written).
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English; ability to interact well with others.
- Willingness to work in potentially stressful environments with aggressive/agitated individuals; respect for culturally diverse populations.
- Respect for confidentiality in all formats (paper/electronic).
- Good work and attendance record.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job.

- May work occasional evenings and weekends as necessary.
- May travel to other regional facilities if required by duties.
