A leading research institute in Barcelona is looking for a motivated research student to work on a project targeting multi-resistant pathogenic bacteria. The position involves laboratory work including microbial cultivation and molecular biology techniques. Applicants should have a Bachelor and Master's degree in a relevant field, with at least two years of laboratory experience. Fluency in Spanish and/or Catalan is required, along with a good command of English. This is a full-time role starting on January 16, 2026, with a 6-month duration.

The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. ISGlobal has a broad portfolio in communicable and non-communicable diseases including environmental and climate determinants, and applies a multidisciplinary scientific approach ranging from the molecular to the population level. Research is organized in five programs: Climate, Air Pollution, Nature and Urban Health; Environment and Health over the Lifecourse; Global Viral and Bacterial Infections; Malaria and Neglected Parasitic Diseases and Maternal Child and Reproductive Health. ISGlobal is accredited with the Severo Ochoa distinction, a seal of excellence of the Spanish Science Ministry.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

ISGlobal is seeking a skilled, organized and motivated research student to join the project entitled: “Nuevas moléculas de oro coordinadas con flavonoides contra bacterias patógenas multirresistentes prioritarias (FLAVOBAC)”. This project is funded by the ISCIII.

The candidate will be involved in:

1) In vivo proof of concept of the liposomal formulation of the cyclometalated gold complex PPR804 and nitrochrome PPR005.

2) Study of the activity and potential synergy of various combinations of gold(III) and flavonoid complexes developed during the execution of this project.

The project is funded by the Carlos III Health Institute (PI22/00148), co-funded by the European Union and coordinated by ISGlobal.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Microbial cultivation, isolation and identification

  • Characterization of the microorganisms by molecular biology techniques (PCR, PFGE, etc.)

    characterization of resistance profiles at both phenotypic and genotypic level

  • Preparation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Write manuscripts for their publication

  • Presentation of results in internal and external meetings

SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • To perform the laboratory tasks associated with this project

  • Write reports and papers

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor and Master degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Environmental sciences, Biomedical or related disciplines.

  • Previous working experience in a microbiology and/or molecular biology laboratory.

  • Experience in both microbial culture and molecular techniques (DNA and RNA extraction, qPCR analysis and metagenomic sequencing).

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
  • At least, 2-years of laboratory experience

LANGUAGE LEVEL
  • Fluent in Spanish and/or Catalan require

  • Good level (at least First certificate) in oral and written English

CONDITIONS
  • Duration: 6 months

  • Salary: According to ISGlobal internal salary scale

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process is designed in two phases:
1- Interview phase of a technical nature, with the team that requires the incorporation. To assess the person's skills and CV.
2 - Meeting with HR with the finalist(s) to finish assessing the profile and discuss contractual and institutional issues.

If needed any technical test could be passed. A Psychological Competency Evaluation Test Will be required for the structural or transversal positions.

In accordance with the OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for every vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will start the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. A profile questionnaire as well as a technical exercise may be required during the process.
