Overview

The primary responsibility of the Data Privacy Legal Counsel, Europe & Africa, is to help Diageo leverage data as a strategic and commercial asset. This role provides strategic guidance to markets in Europe, UK and Africa, working in conjunction with the Senior Data Privacy Director and other members of the Data Privacy team.

The Data Privacy Legal Counsel, Europe & Africa will have deep knowledge of data privacy across the EU, greater Europe, the UK and Africa, and the ability to deliver commercially-minded advice. The successful candidate will operate at both strategic and operational levels, thinking proactively to identify creative solutions and delivering complex messages in a clear, persuasive manner. They will use their legal understanding to ensure market lawyers and the business are well advised on options, explaining legal concepts in plain English and adapting advice to the audience, while working autonomously and taking initiative.

They will need strong interpersonal and influencing skills, flexibility to support different priorities, and confidence to deliver presentations and training on data privacy and protection implications of new technologies to diverse audiences. They will partner with market representatives from legal, data & D&T technology; HR / people & talent; and marketing / commercial. They will work collaboratively with other members of the Global Data Privacy Team to enable Diageo to unlock data usage while maintaining good data stewardship.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise on legal and reputational matters within marketing, technology, innovation and analytics; Human Resources / people & talent; and Digital & Technology and IM&S for the markets within the regions.
  • Deliver training across various business units.
  • Carry out and communicate privacy related legal research - monitor and provide updates on changes to the regulatory landscape.
  • Draft and advise on complex data protection-related documentation, including data transfers, legitimate interest assessments and privacy impact assessments.
  • Lead complex privacy reviews and negotiations with significant risk and complexity affecting multiple business functions.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Qualified lawyer in one of the jurisdictions in scope, with significant and wide-ranging experience of working on EU, UK and Africa privacy matters.
  • Experience advising on, and understanding of, data privacy and protection in the context of digital marketing; HR / employment matters; and new technologies.
  • Demonstrable interest in understanding how technology works to deliver highly effective data privacy advice.
  • 6+ years of legal practice in data privacy, gained in-house, or in a law firm.
  • Successful management of stakeholders at all levels, resulting in strong and positive outcomes.
  • The ability to deal well with ambiguity, complexity and working within a fast-paced, entrepreneurial and matrixed environment.
  • Deep personal accountability for great performance.
  • Additional spoken and written European language(s) are a bonus.
