Contract end date: 31.12.2027

Who can apply? EU nationals working for national central banks of the ESCB, international governmental organisations or other employers performing central banking or banking supervision tasks within the framework of the Eurosystem

Salary: F/G (bracket 1 – step 1) full time monthly net salary: €7,296 plus benefits, for further information see what we offer.

Role specialisation: Datasets and Statistics, Economics and Monetary Policy

Working time: Full time

Place of work: Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Closing date: 12.01.2026

Your team

You will be part of the Monetary and Economic Statistics Division in the Directorate General Statistics. Our Directorate General has around 350 staff providing statistical products and services, including a whole range of aggregated and disaggregated data, to inform not only central banking and banking supervision policy decisions but also the public at large.

Given the growing importance of climate change and sustainability for central banks, we are taking an active role in closing data gaps. We are also addressing statistical issues related to the computation of indicators on carbon footprints of financial and non-financial entities and their exposure to physical risks (such as flooding, windstorms, wildfires and water stress).

Our Division is responsible for developing, compiling and disseminating statistics and statistical indicators. We provide related user services regarding statistics on monetary financial institutions, other financial corporations, financial stability and financial integration in the euro area and the European Union. We also produce general economic statistics, surveys on non-financial sectors and climate change-related indicators.

In your role as an Economist-Statistician, you will work closely with users of statistics in other ECB business areas and the ECB Climate Change Centre. You will cooperate closely with various other teams in the Directorate General Statistics, as well as statisticians at the national central banks.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As an Economist-Statistician you will:

  • take responsibility for assessing, collecting and organising data for the compilation of indicators to be used to analyse the impact of climate change on the economy and the financial system;
  • contribute to designing and developing new statistical datasets and indicators on carbon footprints of financial and non-financial entities and their exposure to physical risks;
  • contribute to enhancing systems, processes and tools for the compilation and visualisation of statistics in the area of climate change;
  • support the Directorate General in contributing to relevant public initiatives that aim to develop sustainability reporting and disclosure standards;
  • prepare and present documentation for meetings of the Statistics Committee’s working groups or task forces, the ECB Climate Centre, and other relevant groups.

This position offers you excellent opportunities to produce and develop statistical indicators that inform policymaking in a leading central bank and to contribute to the analytical agenda related to climate sustainability. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a master’s degree or equivalent in data science, economics, mathematics, climate science or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);
  • in addition to the above, a minimum of four years’ professional experience in producing or developing statistical indicators;
  • experience in handling large-scale microdata, ideally from loan-by-loan or security-by-security datasets, data from business registers or firm-level data;
  • sound analytical and quantitative skills and the ability to define and apply statistical or mathematical concepts, procedures and methodologies;
  • strong expertise in programming, ideally in Python, complemented by proficiency in additional languages such as R or SQL;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • practical knowledge of advanced techniques like parallel computing (e.g. PySpark) and/or collaborative coding practices using tools like GitLab;
  • experience with climate-related issues (such as emissions, exposure to physical risk or sustainability disclosure) and/or international initiatives related to sustainability;
  • knowledge of imputation techniques, time series analysis or similar, applied to macro-level or micro-level data (e.g. in the context of emissions modelling);
  • experience with geospatial data;
  • ability to explain complex technical issues to different stakeholders using simple, non-technical language and ability to draft appropriate documentation.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.

You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.

Further information

The contract(s) offered will be short-term ESCB/IO, the appointment being for 12 months as of the exact starting date of the selected person, extendable to up to 36 months. Candidates must have a contract of employment with their home institution for a period of at least one year beyond the duration of the ECB contract being offered.

For additional information on the specific vacancy, you can speak to the Head of the Economic Statistics Section, Romana Peronaci, on +49 1520 1647622 between 09:30 and 10:30 on 19 December 2025, or Team Lead Małgorzata Osiewicz on +49 162 1303092 between 11:00 and 12:00 on 15 December 2025.
