Staff Software Engineer, Machine Learning – Discord

Location: Remote (US-based) or San Francisco Bay Area

Type: Full-time

Salary: $272K–$306K + equity + benefits

Overview:

Join Discord’s Discovery/Engagement ML team to design and scale personalized recommendation systems that drive user engagement for 200M+ monthly users. You'll lead technical strategy and own end-to-end ML systems using state-of-the-art models and tooling.

Key Responsibilities:

• Set technical direction and solve system-wide ML challenges
• Build scalable, low-latency recommender systems
• Develop deep learning models (e.g., transformer-based, multi-task learning)
• Drive ML product roadmaps and cross-functional collaboration
• Ship production-ready ML features grounded in user impact

Requirements:

• 8+ years in applied ML (Ph.D. or Master’s in CS, ML, AI, or related field)
• Expertise in RecSys architectures (e.g., two-tower, transformers)
• Proficient in Python and ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow)
• Track record of shipping scalable ML systems
• Strong communication and product sense

Bonus:

• Experience with multi-objective ranking or marketplace optimization
• Reinforcement learning in production
• User modeling or personalization
