Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Lead Underwriter Energy Power Generation in our Property & Energy team for Continental Europe. Our experienced global Energy Team, backed by Sompo's financial strength, offers comprehensive underwriting across the entire Energy chain; from oil and gas extraction and refining, to emerging renewable energy solutions. Operating from different global regions we are offering tailored products and significant capacity. The Sompo Continental Europe unit has been focusing on Downstream Chemical and is extending their Energy Underwriting activities into Power Generation and Renewables. This position reports directly into the Continental Europe Head of Property & Energy.

Location: This position will be based out of one of our Continental European offices, preferably Paris, Cologne or Munich.

What you'll be doing:

1. The role will initially focus on underwriting and developing the Power and Utility sub-class portfolio including Renewables within Continental Europe (CE) with a focus on Central Europe. This includes operational risks as well as construction (CAR/EAR) risks.
2. Full and thorough underwriting of all accounts in accordance with underwriting guidelines and individual authority granted by Underwriting Management.
3. Developing and shaping of underwriting strategy, regional risk appetite, technical underwriting product and guidance in collaboration with the CE Head of Property & Energy.
4. Providing meaningful advice and impact on pricing, product, and policy language development.
5. Liaise with local CE country underwriting and business development teams to analyse and support new business within the Energy industry.
6. Perform the underwriting referral function as needed with colleagues and peers in line with established authority for energy business.
7. Build-up of a strong relationship with the regional Sompo Energy teams across London, North America, Singapore, and Brazil ensuring consistent underwriting approach and sharing market/product expertise.
8. Monitor all industry and specific account trends and collaborate with our Energy Risk Engineering specialists to develop superior underwriting and industry support.
9. Represent Sompo at broker & client meetings and market events.

What you'll bring

1. 7+ years relevant experience in underwriting operational and CAR/EAR risks for Power and Utilities.
2. Preferably a Mechanical/Chemical/Electrical/Civil Engineer degree or equivalent degree with additional Experience and specific technical knowledge of underwriting global Power Generation and Renewables placements.
3. Well established relations in and understanding of the CE Energy market.
4. Relevant experience in development of product and technical underwriting guidance for Power Generation and Renewables.
5. Strong interpersonal skills to develop long-term client relationships.
6. Ability to collaborate and influence senior stakeholders within a regional team environment.
7. Ability to analyse highly complex data, from multiple sources, in detail.
8. Excellent language and communication skills in English and ideally in German and/or French.
