Blank Canvases is partnering with OCAD University to deliver a Teaching Art Micro-credential this summer!

This micro-credential will help you gain confidence in teaching art and integrating creative strategies into your teaching practices. Through lectures, discussions, and studio work, you will explore contemporary methods of art teaching. Classroom activities will focus on engaging learners with visual arts techniques emphasizing sustainability, innovation, and accessibility. You will experiment with various 2D and 3D materials, and receive practical, personalized feedback on designing engaging, learner-centered lessons that can be tailored to different teaching contexts and classroom models.

• Explore current art teaching methods and apply them to lesson planning.
• Identify and define studio, community, and art teaching strategies.
• Use studio-based strategies to foster community and collaboration in the classroom.
• Create lesson plans considering:
• Sustainability, accessibility, and affordability
• Engagement, creativity, and inspiration
• Teaching art in a digital context
• Diversity, equity, and decolonization
• Different ages, stages, and classroom models
• Learner-centered principles

This micro-credential is suitable for teachers or individuals seeking to enhance their skills and knowledge in art education across various settings, including schools, camps, daycares, community organizations, private studios, and galleries.

Participants will complete assignments and exercises throughout the modules. Successful application of the key outcomes will earn a digital badge, which can be added to resumes and shared on social media. A link to the badge will be sent via email.

The course will be taught by Natalie Kauffman, Education Director at OCAD. It will take place in person from August 11th to 15th.

This course aims to equip teachers with the confidence to deliver engaging, creative art lessons that meet the Ontario Ministry of Education's Visual Arts learning outcomes.
