About the job

BC Hydro is looking for an experienced Electrical Site Engineer to work on our construction projects and ensure that construction and commissioning are done right. If you are a self-starter who enjoys working in the field on large and complex construction projects and working on new BC Hydro stations, then we invite you to join the Site Engineering team.

This opportunity supports the upcoming capital construction program on the North Coast. Over the next decade we have capital work planned to build out new transmission infrastructure and provide clean, renewable energy to the region. The role will support development, planning, construction and commissioning of a major BC Hydro project, bringing technical expertise to work closely with Construction, Engineering, Equipment Testing and Commissioning, and Maintenance teams.

What you’ll do
  • At the heart of the construction and commissioning, use your technical expertise in electrical equipment, protection and control (P&C) design, construction and testing to answer complex technical queries by bringing design engineers and contractors together to keep construction and commissioning on track.
  • Develop and oversee all technical aspects of field engineering for construction and commissioning of new electrical and P&C equipment, including switchgear, reactive equipment installation (power transformers), electrical equipment protection, generator/turbine control and monitoring, communication networks, and instrumentation systems.
  • Provide construction oversight on major projects, coordinating with contractors to ensure proper sequencing of construction and commissioning activities; review constructability, develop plans, schedules, procedures, and construction/commissioning methods to ensure conformance.
  • Perform first-level quality assurance to confirm execution meets plans, specifications, drawings, and industry standards.
  • Ensure tests and inspections are performed, witnessed, and documented in accordance with procedures and contract requirements; coordinate field reviews and document activities in field review records.
  • Maintain strong relationships with discipline design engineering staff to conduct field reviews and resolve technical issues; address non-conformances in the field by coordinating design and construction teams.
  • Collaborate with Construction Management to identify and mitigate hazards affecting environment, safety, or health.
  • Organize accumulation of assigned discipline technical information (redlined drawings, RFIs, non-conformance reports) and synthesize into construction reports.
  • Coordinate transition from construction to commissioning; develop commissioning plans to bring electrical systems online and verify function; manage test programs, outages, and documentation.
  • Share knowledge and support the professional development of engineers and technical staff; coach, mentor, and provide technical guidance to others.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering recognized by Canadian universities.
  • Eight years of experience in an electrical utility environment related to electrical construction, testing and commissioning, with a background in high voltage equipment or protection and control.
  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the Province of British Columbia.
  • Demonstrated technical writing and presentation skills, with excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ongoing professional development such as self-study, technical courses, and participation in technical and professional societies.
  • Team player who is approachable, takes initiative, and is a proven problem solver.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve challenging engineering problems with independence, considering costs, constructability, operability, and safety implications.
  • Preference given to candidates with knowledge of substation or generating station design, construction, and testing and related experience.
  • Commissioning and testing experience with high voltage equipment; knowledge of electrical utility protection systems (e.g., automated unit control schemes, digital relays, PLC programming); MRS compliance including NERC-PRC, CIP and MOD Standards.
  • BC Hydro Engineering, Construction, Maintenance Practices good standing and valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
Benefits
  • A comprehensive benefits package.
  • A minimum of 15 paid vacation days.
  • A lifetime pension.
  • Flexible work model, depending on role.
  • Training and development courses.
