This position will be based in Chetwynd and will work with the District elementary counselling team to support schools in Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge.

The successful applicant will possess a Master's Degree in Counselling.

The focus of the counselling work will be in assessing and developing interventions and plans for students in the areas of behaviors, social/emotional well-being, and self-determination. These interventions may be delivered individually, in small groups, or in the classroom setting. The candidate will participate in the planning and implementation of behavior plans in collaboration with the school-based team, liaising with outside agencies as needed. A major goal of intervention is to assist students in transferring skills across environments, including the classroom, playground, and other areas. The candidate will also provide direction and support to district intervention workers.

The successful applicant will be a member of the District Learning Services team and will be required to attend district meetings, participate in in-service sessions, and travel to other communities.

District Overview

School District No. 59 (Peace River South) is located in north-eastern British Columbia, in BC’s Peace River Country. We serve the communities and surrounding areas of Dawson Creek, Tumbler Ridge, and Chetwynd. The District’s student population is approximately 3,500, with thirty-three percent of this population self-identifying as having Aboriginal ancestry.

Our students are accommodated in 19 schools, with student populations ranging from 25 to 650 students. The District is involved in several innovative partnerships with local agencies. Desired qualifications and experience include:

• Hold or be qualified for a valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate.
• Experience in adapting and modifying curriculum to meet student needs.
• Experience teaching primary, intermediate, middle school, or secondary students.
• Strong literacy and numeracy skills, with willingness to implement school initiatives and goals.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Knowledge of performance standards related to social responsibility.
• Familiarity with outcomes and evaluation processes outlined in the new curriculum.
• Commitment to individualized and group instruction using effective strategies and techniques.
• Experience teaching in a multi-age setting.
• Strong classroom management skills.
• Training in teaching English Language Learners (ELL).
• Ability to develop and implement individualized learning plans for students with academic, social, and emotional challenges.
• Willingness to collaborate with staff on the school improvement plan.
• Knowledge of Criterion-Based Referencing and Performance-Based Assessment, and Balanced Literacy.
• Experience working with students displaying various behaviors.
