At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Summary

This position is for up to 8 hours/week. A highly motivated and organized Research Assistant is needed for the ART & Justice programs of research to assist with and support general project logistics, community engagement, and support the wider team. This project supports mutual and reciprocal learning, mobilizing the strengths and resources of all members toward generating new health knowledge relevant to people and communities impacted by the criminal justice system, and inspiring social action through art to improve the health and wellness of individuals impacted by the criminal justice system.

This role supports our community-based, participatory, and strengths-based aims to reframe the criminal justice system to improve health and justice for (and with!) peoples disproportionately affected by current systems.

This role will provide:

  • Research intervention support including art supply ordering to support community-based engagement and research goals.
  • Contribution to peer-led projects and processes, as needed
  • Support iterative Knowledge Mobilization across project studies, including art exhibition planning and execution.
Organizational Status

This position reports directly to Dr. Helen Brown and Kelsey Timler, with some guidance from the other project co-leads from the research team, including Indigenous Elders, Peers with lived experience of incarceration, and trainees.

Work Performed

The Research Assistant will work closely with team leadership and report to Dr. Helen Brown and Kelsey Timler. Our project coordinator is expected to contribute to the overall success of the project by providing support in:

  • Contributes to the development and production of artistic Knowledge Mobilization outputs on operational progress aimed at specific partnership audiences, including planning and curating art exhibitions in collaboration with incarcerated participants.
  • Supports grant writing to realize peer-led research and project goals.
  • Supporting literature reviews and academic writing, as needed
  • Supports diverse Knowledge Translation and dissemination strategies
  • Performs technical tasks, such as website and social media content management
  • Cataloguing art to support prison in-reach through our website
  • Troubleshooting IT, Finance, and HR-related issues
  • Organizing catering for events and meetings
  • Organizing and hosting bi-weekly art workshops at Williamhead Prison, including the ordering of supplies and planning of scaffolding art teaching activities.
  • Communicating updates and action items verbally and/or in writing
  • Coordinates training workshops for team members, as needed
  • Liaises with team affiliates for collaborative workshops, meetings, and projects.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors or incorrect decisions could compromise the quality of the research and the collegial relationships with partners and/or participants. In turn, this could result in delays in completing projects and potentially impact the credibility of ART & Justice and its investigators. Inability to exercise sound and sensitive judgment could diminish ART & Justice (and its team's) ability to attract the support of the scientific community and/or lead to poor public/private sector relationships and partnerships. This work must be completed at a high level of consideration, reflexivity, and professionalism.

This position will be responsible for the access, collection, use, and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.

Supervision Received

The candidate will report directly to Dr. Helen Brown and Kelsey Timler and will work closely with the Peer Coordinator and Peer Co-lead and Elder team. The candidate is expected to be self-motivated and able to work independently. This is a work-from-home position, with frequent phone and/or Zoom meetings with the team to ensure connection, dialogue, and supervision.

Supervision Given

None.

Minimum Qualifications
