Job description

We have an exciting position opening up at INRS in Montreal, where critical geographers abound! Please see the annoucement below. In addition to conducting critical research on immigration and the urban, the candidate would contribute to teaching in our MSc and PhD programs in Urban Studies. Note that teaching, meetings, and daily life at INRS happens in French, but support is available for faculty whose primary language is not French to help improve their language skills.

The INRSCentre Urbanisation Culture Sociétéis accepting applications for a a tenure-track professor position in teaching and research on the theme of cities and immigration. This position aligns with several axes of the Center’s 2025–2030 scientific program , including Axis 1 – Anti-racism and decolonization, Axis 4 – Imaginariesand politics of everyday life, Axis 5 – Socioecological crises and transformations, and Axis 6 – Production and reproduction of inequalities.

Urban immigration has always been central to urban studies.Immigration is central to the development of large metropolitan areas, as well as small and medium-sized cities. These transformations spark public debates and occupy an increasingly prominent place in current affairs, while qualitative approaches in immigration and urban research provide theoretical and methodological tools to better grasp the complexity of the migratory experience in this context

The successful candidate must have expertise in immigration issues in urban contexts and demonstrate a record of achievements and publications offering theoretical and empirical contributions in this field. They will favor a qualitative approach in social sciences while integrating into the Center’s multidisciplinary environment. They will complement existing expertise on migration by developing innovative research activities on urban studies topics such as:

  • social policies on immigration in urban contexts;
  • (re)production of inequalities in cities;
  • migrant experience in cities;
  • transformation of public spaces andsocial ties;
  • struggles and resistance of immigrants (e.g., against racism or for human rights or climate justice).

The candidate should hold a Ph.D. in urban sociology or a related social science discipline, such as urban studies, anthropology, geography, political science, or others.
