Job Title: Turf Maintenance Supervisor

Superintendent / Assistant Superintendent
Position Summary
The Turf Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading daily golf course maintenance operations with a strong emphasis on turf health, crew supervision, and regulatory compliance. This role includes hands‑on application of fertilizers and plant protection products, oversight of daily crew assignments, irrigation support, and acting as the lead supervisor in the absence of senior management.
Hours of work may begin up to 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time and extend up to 30 minutes beyond the scheduled finish time. These adjusted hours may occur either before or after the standard shift and will vary week to week based on operational requirements, weather conditions, and course needs.
The position requires strong leadership, technical turf knowledge, and the ability to train and mentor staff while maintaining high standards of course presentation, efficiency, and safety.
Key Responsibilities
Turf & Chemical Applications
- Conduct fertilizer, pesticide, herbicide, and fungicide applications (liquid and granular) across all areas of the golf course.
- Ensure all applications comply with federal, provincial, and municipal regulations, label requirements, and environmental best practices.
- Maintain accurate application records, inventories, and calibration logs.
- Monitor turf conditions and provide recommendations to management.
Crew Supervision & Course Setup
- Supervise, lead, and assign daily work activities for maintenance crews.
- Assist with and oversee course setup, including:
- Raking bunkers
- Greens setup and mowing
- Fairway and rough mowing
- General course presentation and detail work
- Ensure work is completed efficiently, safely, and to established quality standards.
Morning Routine Responsibilities
- Prepare and stage equipment required for daily operations.
- Set up carts and equipment for assigned daily jobs.
- Check frost conditions and make appropriate operational decisions.
- Review overnight irrigation and watering performance.
- Participate in and assist with the morning crew meeting, including task assignments, safety reminders, and daily priorities.
Afternoon Routine Responsibilities
- Assist with parking and securing all equipment at the end of the day.
- Support washing and cleaning of equipment and machinery.
- Help organize crew members with end‑of‑day duties.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the wash pad area.
- Assist with crew tasks related to Turf Prophit.
- Fuel equipment and prepare machinery for the following day’s operations.
Leadership & Coverage
- Act as the lead supervisor when the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent are absent.
- Provide leadership, decision‑making, and problem‑solving to ensure uninterrupted operations.
- Communicate expectations clearly and professionally with all staff.
Construction & Equipment Operation
- Assist with golf course construction and renovation projects.
- Operate heavy equipment and specialized turf maintenance machinery as required.
- Support in‑house projects through effective coordination of labor and equipment.
Training & Staff Development
- Train new and existing employees on:
- Safe operation of all turf maintenance equipment
- Proper work techniques and job procedures
- Golf course standards and expectations
- Promote a professional, team‑oriented, and safety‑focused work environment.
Irrigation Support
- Assist with irrigation system maintenance and repair, including:
- Locating, digging, and repairing mainline and lateral breaks
- Sprinkler troubleshooting and repairs
- Valve and head replacement
- Support irrigation scheduling, setup, and watering plans to optimize turf performance and water efficiency.
Qualifications & Skills
- Previous experience in golf course maintenance or turf management required
- Supervisory or crew‑lead experience strongly preferred
- Valid pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe)
- Knowledge of turfgrass management practices
- Experience operating turf equipment and heavy machinery
- Working knowledge of irrigation systems and repair techniques is an advantage
- Leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required
