Treatment Plants Operator – Summer Term

Position Posting: (1 Position Available)

Term of Employment

Full‑time, Summer Term (May 4, 2026 – August 28, 2026)

Rate of Pay

Water and Wastewater Salary Grid: $31.33 per hour (Subject to CUPE 1015 Agreement)

Location

Wastewater Treatment Plant

Responsibilities
  • Provide expertise in controlling the wastewater treatment process and equipment, including operation, maintenance, and laboratory analysis.
  • Participate in the City of Lloydminster’s Safety Management System.
  • Data collection and analysis; starting/stopping equipment; preventative maintenance; cleanliness of the facility; laboratory sample collection and analysis.
  • Assist and conduct all aspects of the Pollution Prevention Program, including industrial sampling, site inspections, and residential educational programs.
  • Adjust airflow, blower outputs, chemical dosing, and process parameters to maintain treatment quality.
  • Monitor flows, pond levels, wet well levels, pressures, dissolved oxygen levels, and effluent quality; make appropriate process changes.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, lubrication, operation of moving parts, cleaning, and painting; direct emergency repairs or process corrections on a 24‑hour per day basis.
  • Maintain plant boilers, glycol circulation system, and Make‑Up Air Unit.
  • Observe pumps and motors for unusual noises, vibration, or excess heat; adjust or replace seals and mechanical seals.
  • Maintain the site with weed maintenance, string trimming, garbage pickup, and general janitorial tasks.
  • Maintain plant records, operating logs, daily inspection data, equipment maintenance files, supply inventories, and weekly laboratory entries; collect and record data for reporting and permit requirements.
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures, conduct regular safety inspections, and hazard assessments; take corrective actions when required.
  • Research process variables and potential process improvements to ensure optimum treatment.
  • Collect representative wastewater samples and conduct laboratory analysis for biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, ammonia, nitrates, alkalinity, turbidity, color, and all other laboratory requirements.
  • Collect, transport, and submit samples to be analyzed by third‑party laboratories.
  • Perform monthly calibrations on lab equipment; clean and maintain all lab equipment and facilities.
  • Assist in conducting commercial and industrial site inspections; assist in the investigation of spills to the stormwater or sanitary sewer systems; assist in collecting, transporting, and packaging industrial wastewater samples to determine compliance with the Pollution Prevention Program.
  • Assist in the development and presentation of residential educational material; assist in updating and enforcing the Sewer Use Bylaw 65‑2013.
Schedule

Normal working hours are between 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with the occasional requirement to work outside these standard hours and a rotating on‑call schedule.

Qualifications
  • Post‑secondary study in wastewater and/or water treatment, environmental management, or an acceptable equivalent.
  • Ability to upgrade certifications throughout the course of employment.
  • Team player with a positive attitude that can communicate effectively with supervisors and operators on the appropriate technical level.
  • Must possess basic mechanical knowledge and be in good physical condition.
  • Must be able to complete tasks with minimal direction and be self‑motivated.
  • Must be able to comprehend maps, schematics, blueprints, and technical documents.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal; with the ability to speak confidently in a public setting are essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required.
  • Must be innovative, detail‑oriented, and methodical.
  • Capable of managing conflicting, high‑priority assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop good working relationships at various levels both internally and externally; able to resolve concerns or complaints.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret research data for reports and apply mathematical techniques in practical situations, such as calculating volumes, flows, and percentage removals.
  • Comprehension of laboratory data, bylaws, and Permit language.
  • Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Vehicle Operator’s License (registered in Alberta or Saskatchewan) with a clear driving record.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Work Environment

This position is a combination of office, laboratory, workshop, and outdoor work, potentially in adverse weather conditions and in potentially hazardous worksites.

Special Instructions

Applicants must be attending a post‑secondary program including college or university during the last school term and returning to studies in the subsequent academic year. Verification of student status will be required.
