Job description
Position Overview

The Math & Science Center Summer Institute Resident Assistants will live in a residence hall and supervise approximately 25 to 35 high school students who are participating in a six-week educational institute at KU during the summer. Each Resident Assistant is assigned a group of 10-14 students, but is responsible for supervising every student.

The Summer Institute dates are 5/31/26 - 7/10/26, with orientation scheduled on 5/28/26 - 5/29/26.

RA must be available 24 hours a day (Sunday 4:30PM through Friday 3:30PM).

The salary for the RA positions: $18 per hour plus room and meals.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the effective date of the appointment. KU is not able to provide immigration sponsorship for this position.

Job Description

80% - Use professional ethics, implement goals, objectives, policies and procedures of the summer component and supervise students in a group living environment to ensure their safety and well-being. RA duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide support to students in personal, social, and academic areas.
  • Assesses any residence hall problems, assimilate facts, process viewpoints and make decisions in compliance with program guidelines.
  • Facilitate and supervise students during study hall.
  • Serve as a liaison between administration and residence hall staff.
  • Create proper environment for both students and staff; Manage health problems and medical emergencies for students.
  • Monitor and evaluate student's academic and social progress; see that students are up in the morning and prepared for class and making regular classroom visits.
  • Participate in staff orientation and attend all staff meetings.

10% - Assist in planning, organizing and implementing recreational, social, and cultural activities, and maintain discipline and harmonious relations in the residence hall and all other areas of the program; participate in all program recreational activities, field trips and residential life, and conduct required workshops for participants (including evening and weekend responsibilities).

5% - Oversee the physical maintenance of the residence hall as it pertains to Math & Science Center students (this involves establishing procedures for key assignment and collection; prevention of abuse of furniture, lounges, and rooms; checking the condition of rooms before and after Math & Science Center students’ occupancy).

5% - Other duties as assigned by the Director.

Position Requirements

This position is on-site at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS and is required to maintain 24-hour residency, 6 days-a week for six weeks.

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED Equivalent plus one year of coursework at a Higher Education institution.
  • Familiarity with college residence hall policies and procedures as demonstrated by application materials.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with a wide variety of high school students as evidenced by application materials
  • Experience with conflict resolution as evidenced by application materials
  • Tutoring experience
  • Experience coordinating and supervising group living experiences in a team focused work environment
  • Have effective communication skills, as demonstrated in application materials
  • Possess good organizational skills, as demonstrated in application materials
  • Must have high level of maturity; be self-disciplined and teamwork orientated, as demonstrated in application materials
  • Previous TRIO (E.g. Upward Bound) Program experience
  • Valid driver's license
  • At least six months prior supervisory experience
