This is a home-based position within the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton.
Responsibilities
- Independently determines project scope, develops a preliminary plan of investigation, and determines project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction.
- Initiates communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services. Follows up on contacts from clients. Communicates with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. Addresses client concerns and resolves complex client issues. Provides technical assistance to clients regarding product inspection and follow-up services.
- Establishes appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements. Determines areas where the product is not in compliance with UL requirements or where project scope or specifications have changed, and notifies the client.
- Coordinates administrative aspects of project management. Serves as Project Handler of record and signs as Reviewer of record as assigned.
- Communicates project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports. Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
- Represents UL on technical committees and/or industry-related functions such as seminars and trade shows (as applicable).
- Directs and reviews work of assigned staff. Trains field evaluation staff. Provides technical assistance in several product categories, operations, or systems to field evaluation staff.
- Performs other duties as directed.
Qualifications
- Field Evaluation (Special Inspection) work experience: CSA SPE-1000 and CSA SPE-3000.
- Hazardous Locations Field Certification work experience and CSA B149.3 gas field evaluation experience is a bonus.
- Position requires approx. 60% travel time to conduct inspections and perform tests at client sites.
- Ability to work remotely with frequent travel.
- Experienced with the utilization of electrical test equipment.
- Expert knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code.
- Strong client-interfacing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining high quality and exceptional customer service.
- Demonstrated ability to partner with Engineering and other Laboratory personnel to complete projects in a timely manner with high quality.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze special testing needs.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor more junior laboratory staff.
- Highly effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact with customers.
- Proven ability to be innovative and creative; desire to work in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office suite; ability to incorporate automation into day-to-day testing.

This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 5% of base salary and provides health benefits (medical, dental, vision), wellness benefits, and retirement savings commensurate with location. Full-time employees receive paid time off including vacation (15 days), holidays including floating holidays (12 days), and sick time off (72 hours).
