Overview

What is the opportunity?

You will be part of the RBC Law Group supporting RBC Insurance and its various lines of business/corporate entities. As Senior Counsel on the Disputes Management Legal team, you will provide advice with respect to various types of disputes involving primarily life and health insurance, but also with respect to the sale and administration of home and auto insurance, and creditor insurance. While this position is ideally located with the law group team in Mississauga, RBC would also consider candidates who could work in Toronto or Montreal.

Responsibilities
  • Providing pre-litigation legal advice to the various RBC Insurance lines of business and corporate entities concerning their rights and obligations, and to assist in resolving disputes, such as providing substantive legal advice concerning the following:
    • Life and Health disputes/complaints related to claims, underwriting, policy rescissions, policy lapses, customer service, etc.
    • The RBC Insurance Agency disputes/complaints related to the sale of home and auto insurance
    • The Creditor insurance disputes/complaints related to operations and claims
  • Drafting substantive/positional correspondence, drafting or reviewing legal documents such as court orders, affidavits and release agreements, negotiating settlements with opposing counsel, and reviewing client-facing correspondence
  • Assist or lead ad hoc projects and internal investigations as necessary
  • Providing legal advice with respect to active litigation or complaints, by proactively managing external counsel with respect to a complex portfolio of:
    • primarily life and health claims related litigation, and possibly also,
    • creditor insurance litigation
    • litigation related to the sale of home and auto insurance
Qualifications
Must have
  • Law degree
  • Call to the Bar of a Canadian province/territory, and member in good standing with applicable law society
  • 5 years+ of insurance defense litigation experience in private practice or with an insurance company, preferably involving experience in first party insurance defense litigation
  • Good comprehension of written French
Nice-to-have
  • Experience in the area of life and disability claims and litigation
  • French language skills, including the ability to participate in business meetings in French
  • Civil Law degree
