Job summary

A mental health care facility in Ottawa is seeking a recreation therapist to plan and coordinate therapeutic programs for clients with severe mental illness. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Recreation or Therapeutic Recreation and experience working in a community setting. Responsibilities include developing individualized plans, facilitating participation in activities, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. Fluent English is mandatory, with bilingualism as an asset.

Job description
Duties:
  • Plan, implement and coordinate therapeutic recreation programs for the Schizophrenia program under the direction of the Manager, Patient Care Services.
  • Develop goals, objectives, policies and procedures for recreation and leisure services based on client needs and best practices.
  • Create individualized recreation plans, conduct assessments, and prepare required reports in compliance with ROHCG policies and TRO standards.
  • Facilitate client participation in recreation, leisure and educational activities.
  • Organize outings and community based activities, research suitable opportunities for clients with severe mental illness.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team, families and community agencies to coordinate services.
  • Manager equipment resources, supervise students and volunteers and support quality and risk management initiatives.
  • Ensure program information is accessible to clients and families, promote opportunities for client involvement in planning and participation.
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of the Royal.
  • Ensure a work environment that is conducive to the Royalu2019s Anti-Racism, Harassment, & Discrimination Free Workplace Policy.
Qualifications:
  • University degree in Recreation/Leisure Studies or a post-grad Therapeutic Recreation diploma
  • Experience working with clients who suffer from a severe mental illness
  • Knowledge of the impact of diagnosis on leisure functioning
  • Ability to design and lead client centered, evidence based recreation therapy and leisure programs.
  • Experience conducting assessments, developing and evaluating therapeutic programs, documenting outcomes, and developing community connections.
  • Experience working in a Community setting is an asset.
  • Membership in Therapeutic Recreation Ontario is an asset and eligible for registration.
  • Class F license is an asset.
  • English level A- in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading and writing is mandatory. Bilingual (French/English) is considered an asset.
