Scope of the Role

The Program Therapist reports to the Programs Manager and participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team to plan, implement and evaluate programs, outings and events that meet the residents’ physical, social, emotional, intellectual, cognitive, spiritual and cultural needs.

Responsibilities
  • Complete all required documentation: program guides, participation records, monthly stats, recreation assessments, quarterly notes, interRAI-MDS/CAPS, care plan updates, progress notes, and other assessments.
  • Plan and deliver programs based on resident assessments, introducing creative and innovative activities regularly.
  • Organize special events, community programs, and outings.
  • Evaluate and adapt programs as needed.
  • Conduct equipment assessments and ensure residents have appropriate assistive devices.
  • Participate in departmental, home area, and multidisciplinary care meetings.
  • Maintain effective communication with residents, families, volunteers, and staff.
  • Keep posters, notices, and activity calendars current, attractive, and accessible.
  • Coordinate media notices with the Programs Manager for special programming.
  • Build and maintain community contacts and partnerships to support programming.
  • Understand the Home’s quality indicators, including publicly reported ones, and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned and or indicated in Job Task Inventory
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary diploma/degree/certificate in recreation, leisure, therapeutic recreation, gerontology, or related field (Ontario or equivalent from another jurisdiction),ORrelevant skills/experience in providing recreation and social programs.
  • Experience working with seniors; training in GPA, PIECES, and U-First.
  • Demonstrated person-centered approach and ability to support the Butterfly Model.
  • Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating programs.
  • Strong computer, organizational, and communication (written/verbal) skills.
  • Knowledge of interRAI-MDS (AIS certification required within 1 year if not already certified).
  • Current CPR and First Aid.
  • Able to meet all legal requirements while upholding residents’ rights and managing risk.
  • Compliance & Health Requirements: A current Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) completed within the past six months, or willingness to obtain one.
  • TB test results dated within the last six months, or within 14 days of hire; alternatively, a chest X-ray completed within the last year, in accordance with Public Health guidelines.
  • Proof of all required vaccinations must be provided. Staying "up to date" with recommended vaccines is strongly encouraged. Requirements are subject to change based on Employer directives.
