Job description

Point Grey Golf & Country Club ("Point Grey" or "the Club"), located in the heart of Vancouver, BC, offers a golf course that is the hub of a community, with national recognition.

The golf course is a parkland style course, steeped in Scottish heritage. With a rich history that includes hosting the 1954 Canadian Open and more recent high‑level events, the course provides an unforgettable and timeless experience. The Club recently hired Ian Andrew as its golf course architect and is entering an exciting time of transition for the crown jewel and most important asset of Point Grey.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the General Manager, Chief Operating Officer, the Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for the overall maintenance, operation, and management of the golf course and surrounding grounds. As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Superintendent plays an integral role in delivering an exceptional member experience and supporting the Club’s Strategic Plan.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

The following responsibilities align with the competencies outlined above and are crucial for ensuring the Club’s continued success and member satisfaction. The Superintendent must be able to lead collaboratively, innovate strategically, and manage the club's grounds while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and overseeing day-to-day operations.

Golf Course Maintenance

  • Inspect the course daily and ensure the course is in top playing condition.
  • Conduct daily meetings with team members to ensure standards are being met.
  • Review and develop agronomic practices.
  • Engage third party consultants to recommend best practices (as required).
  • Ensure that any factors that could have a negative impact on the course are identified and managed quickly and effectively.
  • Initiate and direct course improvements.

Human Resources

  • Attracts, retains and engages team members.
  • Provides training and development models for all functions.
  • Sets expectations and standards for staff members and ensures they continuously meet their goals.
  • Conduct performance reviews for all team members.
  • Ensure all labour standards are complied with.
  • Exhibit leadership qualities and contribute to building a positive team culture.

Financial

  • Prepare and manage annual operating and capital budgets for Course & Grounds.
  • Monitor monthly financial statements to ensure budget compliance.
  • Establish vendor reviews and obtain quotes for purchases.
  • Maintain equipment maintenance lists and hours of service of all equipment.
  • Play an active role in the process of purchasing new equipment.

Communication

  • Communicate openly and effectively with the GM/COO, Board Committees, and membership regarding course conditions, projects, and initiatives.
  • Participate in member engagement efforts to help educate and inform on agronomic practices and course development.
  • Support a positive member experience through professionalism, visibility, and proactive communication.

Project Management

  • Be involved in every stage of course projects.
  • Ensure effective execution of projects; financial and quality control.

Strategic Contribution

  • Support the GM/COO and Senior Leadership Team in achieving the Club’s strategic goals.
  • Partner with the golf course architect and project teams on planning and execution of course enhancement projects.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to quality standards.
  • Contribute to the Club’s long‑term strategic planning with a focus on course sustainability, infrastructure renewal, and environmental stewardship.

Leadership

  • Must be hands‑on and lead by example.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of all aspects of course maintenance.
  • Effectively communicate with team and golf course members.
  • Recognize problems and act clearly and decisively.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with all members of staff.
QUALIFICATIONS

The Superintendent is responsible for effectively leading the team to achieve excellence on the golf course and throughout the Point Grey Golf & Country Club property. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Diploma or degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy or related field.
  • Minimum 5‑7 years of progressive leadership experience as a Golf Course Superintendent or Associate Superintendent at a top‑tier club or facility.
  • Sound understanding of agronomics and how to apply those concepts to the golf course.
  • Possess and maintain a valid pesticide applicators license.
  • Experience leading a team and managing various human resource issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills that support open communication with departments, staff, members and committees.
  • Ability to form trusting, respectful and effective relationships members of the team.
  • Committed to environmental stewardship, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Highly organized with the ability to multi‑task.
COMPENSATION

Point Grey Golf & Country Club will offer an attractive year‑round compensation package, commensurate with experience. We are open to candidates across the country with a possible relocation budget. The salary range is $175,000 to $250,000, depending on experience. This includes a competitive base salary, extended healthcare and RRSP benefits, and a performance bonus.
