The Opportunity

Recreation and Culture Services builds vibrant, healthy, active and connected communities by providing facilities and programs that give all Barrie residents an opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Key responsibilities include identifying community recreation needs and interests, developing and delivering recreation opportunities which meet these needs and interests, maintaining and operating recreational and cultural facilities to provide a setting for these activities, and managing the provision of space to external community providers and groups.

Under the general guidance and direction of the Recreation Active Living Programmer, and reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, the Personal Trainer (PT) position is responsible for providing one on one fitness training. Specifically, this position develops and delivers customized workout plans for clients. Overall, this position plays an integral role in helping customers of the City of Barrie’s Fitness Centre achieve their fitness goals through education and training.

Education
  • Secondary School Diploma
  • Valid Personal Training Certification from an accredited institution and/or association
  • Standard First Aid, CPR Level C and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certifications
Experience
  • Demonstrated experience using fitness machines, free weights and cardio equipment
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
  • Working knowledge of proper exercises techniques, in accordance with fitness industry standards
  • Demonstrated ability to exert physical effort to use fitness machines, free weights and cardio equipmentDemonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Basic oral and written communication, customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Availability to work weekdays, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays, when required
Conditions of Employment
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check*. Please note that this is a requirement for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.

Location

Allandale Recreation Centre (190 Bayview Drive, Barrie), East Bayfield Community Centre (80 Livingstone Street East, Barrie), Peggy Hill Team Community Centre (171 Mapleton Avenue, Barrie)

Hours

The normal hours of work are up to and including 24 hours per week with a varying schedule to support business demand.

Wage

This is a casual part-time non-union position with the following 2025 pay range:

  • Hourly Pay Rate: $22.55 to $30.68
