Job summary

A community support organization in Toronto is seeking a Permanent Part-Time Cook to prepare and deliver nutritious meals for residents. In this role, you will follow standardized recipes, manage inventory, and maintain kitchen safety. Qualifications include a Valid Safe Food Handling Certificate and chef training. The ideal candidate will have experience in large quantity cooking and an understanding of diversity issues. This position requires weekend work with a competitive salary of $28.76/hr.

Qualifications

Mission Statement

Homes First Society develops and provides affordable, stable housing and support services to break the cycle of homelessness for people with the fewest housing options.

Position type: Part-time, Permanent

Location: Near St Clair Ave and Danforth Rd

Hours of work: Saturday & Sunday, 9am-5pm, plus one other day (Wednesday, 10am-6pm)

Salary: $28.76/ hr

Job Purpose

Prepare and deliver nutritious meals to culturally diverse residents and implement the nutrition and food preparation program to residents.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Prepare meals and snacks for small and large groups of people
  • Able to follow standardized recipes, while being aware of special dietary requirements
  • Ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances and be creative with the meal preparation utilizing donated foods and/or ingredients; minimizes food wastage
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbsAdheres to food safety and sanitation procedures and ensures a clean and safe work environment is maintained
  • Regularly cleans kitchen area and equipment
  • Able to stand for extended periods of time
  • Maintains and manages inventory, responsible for ordering, receiving and storing products
  • Ability to prepare and maintain statistical reports, basic budgeting and computer skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English and follow oral and written instructions
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as with others when required
  • Knowledge of tenant populations, diversity issues, anti-discrimination practices and systemic reasons for homelessness
  • Other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid Safe Food Handling Certificate
  • Chef training or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience in large quantity cooking
  • Demonstrated knowledge of food preparation and ability to ensure quality and flavour are maintained
  • Demonstrated knowledge and maintenance of all kitchen equipment
  • Experience in working in communities with marginalized and/ or persons living with mental illness and/ or addictions is an asset
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act an asset
  • Current certificates in First Aid/ CPR an asset
