Reporting to the Executive Manager, People and Culture, the Consultant, Employee Health and Wellness is integral in ensuring consistent, collaborative, and effective approaches in the ongoing development, implementation, and maintenance of Employee Health and Wellness programs. This includes, but is not limited to, the management of and commitment to employee health and wellness, disability case management, Employee Assistance Program, and Attendance Support Program.

The Consultant is responsible for implementing and facilitating the early intervention and return to work processes, manages non-occupational short-term and long-term disability claims, and oversees the Board’s attendance support program, while maintaining standards of professional conduct consistent with department expectations, including the confidential nature of the department. Other tasks include employee health and wellness programs and initiatives, the Board’s Employee Assistance Program, CUPE Early Intervention Committee Meetings, ensuring appropriate medical documentation is collected and processed within Collective Agreement timelines, prepare and present Health and Wellness Board reports, and other duties that align with and support the employee Health and Wellness portfolio.

Qualifications And Skills Required

• Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field, such as Disability Management, Occupational Health, Occupational Therapy, Human Resources Management, and/or Industrial Relations
• Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) Designation is considered an asset
• Minimum five (5) years of related claims and attendance management experience, preferably with a school board or other public-sector unionized organization
• Extensive knowledge and experience with claims adjudication, early intervention and modified work processes
• Experience with developing, implementing, maintaining, and managing attendance support programs
• Excellent problem solving, analytical, interpersonal, dispute-resolution, written, and verbal communication skills while demonstrating compassion
• Ability to work collaborative and communicate clearly with cross functional teams, including Association and Union partners, and all levels of the organization
• Ability to function effectively under pressure and time constraints
• Initiative and judgment, working effectively with minimal supervision
• Demonstrated professional ethic and sensitivity to the confidential nature of the position and to individual situations

Operational Responsibilities

• Administer employee non-occupational short- and long-term disability claims utilizing proven best practice approaches
• Implement and facilitate early intervention and return to work processes by creating and supporting return to work and accommodation plans, establishing clear expectations for workplace parties for safe and successful return to work
• Monitor employee sick leave usage ensuring supporting medical documentation is provided
• In collaboration with the Specialist, Health and Wellness, manage and support the Board’s Attendance Support Program (AMP), including early intervention strategies, health workplace and attendance support initiatives
• Liaison for the Board’s EFAP vendor and endorse utilization by Board employees through regular promotion strategies
• Maintain effective and regular communication with stakeholders to ensure successful accommodation and return-to-work plans with ongoing monitoring (i.e. LTD Case Managers and Rehabilitation Consultants, supervisors, employees, union partners, etc.)
