Outreach and Shelter Liaison Worker

Reports to: Program Director

Terms of Employment: Permanent Full-Time 40 hours per week

Monday to Friday 9am-5pm but may vary depending on program needs

Position Summary

The Outreach and Shelter Liaison Worker provides integrated support to victims of family violence. This unique role bridges in-shelter care with community-based outreach, ensuring continuity of support for clients whether they are residing in shelter, transitioning out, or accessing services in the community. This position will provide crisis intervention, advocacy, education, and practical supports with a trauma-informed, client-centered approach.

This position strengthens both the immediate safety net (shelter services) and the long-term resilience network (community supports, prevention, and education).

Key Responsibilities
In-Shelter Duties

Provide compassionate, non-judgmental support to individuals residing in shelter. Conduct intake, orientation, needs assessments, and safety planning with residents. Monitor the shelter environment to ensure safety, enforce guidelines respectfully, and de-escalate crisis situations.

Answer phone calls, provide support and referrals, and determine shelter eligibility. Maintain accurate case notes, client statistics, and program reports in line with agency policies. Support day-to-day operations including meals, transportation, household routines.

Outreach Duties
Client Support & Advocacy

Work with women, men, and families in the community who are experiencing or have experienced family violence.

Assist with applications for financial, legal, and housing supports (e.g., Income Support, Escaping Abuse Benefit).

Conduct danger assessments and collaboratively develop responsive safety plans. Provide accompaniment to appointments when appropriate.

Advocate on behalf of clients with systems resource navigation such as government supports, courts, healthcare, and housing.

Community Education & Prevention

Assist with facilitating presentations, awareness campaigns, and group sessions that build understanding of family violence, healthy relationships, and natural supports.

Represent the organization when and if required at schools, community groups, and public events to promote education and prevention initiatives on family violence. Distribute resources, posters, and program materials throughout the county and maintain visibility of shelter and outreach services.

Interagency Collaboration

Attend interagency meetings across the region, ensuring strong working relationships with community partners.

Collaborate with other service providers to create wrap-around supports for clients. Participate in community initiatives that strengthen awareness, coordination, and response to family violence.

Maintain strong referral pathways and serve as a liaison between shelter and external agencies.

Program Development & Visibility

Support the facilitation of outreach programming that responds to emerging needs in the community.

Assist with raising the profile of the organization through partnerships, media, and social media initiatives.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Post-secondary education in Social Work, or a related Human Services field preferred, however a combination of both education and work experience may be considered.
  • Eligible for registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers or related professional body (preferred).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of family violence, trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and safety planning.
  • Strong understanding of community resources, social service systems, and advocacy practices.
  • Valid First Aid / CPR and ASIST certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; knowledge of social media and Canva an asset.
  • Clear Police Intervention Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child Intervention Check
  • Valid Alberta Drivers License and a clean driving abstract
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings, weekends, based on program needs
  • Ability to work in a team and with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences and to work under pressure
