Overview

Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental Specialist

Locations: North Vancouver, Oakland, New York

Join us in shaping a better tomorrow. Become a vital part of our global team, responsible for integrating our management system into business processes and culture and communicating Health and Safety programs, policies, and processes to ensure high safety levels across all company offices and site locations in North America. You will manage the Environmental Management System for both Canadian and US operations, supporting continuous improvement in environmental performance. You will provide local support to the Business Line Process & Quality Director and serve as a role model for Process & Quality, Occupational Health & Safety, and environmental best practices. This role contributes to safety and environmental initiatives that protect our people, reinforce regulatory compliance, and support operational excellence.

Key responsibilities

Health and Safety:

  • In collaboration with Group Health and Safety, develop, plan, and implement safety policies, standards, and procedures; ensure effective delivery of local safety training programs, including management of the E-Learn platform.
  • Respond to health and safety emergencies, investigate accidents, troubleshoot and resolve office and site safety issues, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Assist local health and safety representatives with hazard and risk assessments pertaining to OH&S assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, codes, standards, and regulations by interfacing with government, industry, and regulatory bodies.
  • Maintain accurate safety records and reports in line with local legislation and procedures, including ISO 45001 certification and COR audit processes.
  • Collaborate with local health and safety representatives to manage training records, PPE inventories, office first aid supplies, ergonomic evaluations, site safety plans, and safety documentation.
  • Co-chair the Health and Safety committee, prepare safety reports and metrics, support site safety meetings, and work with HR and supervisors to facilitate Modified Work Programs for workplace injuries in Canada and the US.

Environmental:

  • Support maintaining and further developing ISO 14001 certification and ensure ongoing environmental compliance.
  • Provide Environmental Management System (EMS) reports and updates to management.
  • Assist local health and safety representatives with hazard and risk assessments pertaining to environmental assessments.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on environmental performance.
  • Perform other environment-related duties as assigned.

Requirements include:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5+ years of experience in health & safety and environmental management from the AEC industry.
  • Experience implementing health & safety and environmental strategy and goals within international organizations.
  • Familiarity with maintaining and developing a management system including management reviews, objective setting, process descriptions, and training.
  • Experience ensuring legal compliance with US or Canadian legislation.
  • Understanding OH&S elements such as hazardous work, physical working environment, psychosocial well-being, and emergency preparedness; experience with on-site or field engineering work.
  • Practical experience managing, implementing, and improving ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certifications; familiarity with ISO 9001 and 27001 is a plus.

Base compensation: $92,800 to $116,000 for North Vancouver; $90,400 to $113,000 for Oakland and New York. Actual compensation varies by education, experience, skill set, and location.
