The Opportunity:
The OH&S Specialist works closely with the Plant Manager and the Plant Leadership team to promote Occupational Health and Safety at the Maple Leaf Foods Canning facility. The OH&S Specialist identifies hazards and assesses risks to health and safety, and provides advice on accident prevention and occupational health to supervisors and employees. Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life:
- Design and implement workplace processes and procedures to protect workers from hazardous conditions
- Prepare written reports and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
- Assist with investigation of accidents and unsafe conditions, study possible causes and recommend remedial action
- Ensure all accidents and near misses are reported and preventative action plans are completed
- Assist with rehabilitation of workers after accidents or injuries and ensure satisfactory return to work
- Review, document and follow up on all hazard reporting
- Work with safety captains and the Joint Health and Safety Committee to inspect and test work areas for hazards and implement control measures (including daily audits and committee participation)
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment and safe storage of dangerous materials
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation related to plant, equipment and substances as well as workplace activities
- Facilitate promotion of safe work behavior
- Participate in safety committee meetings as applicable
- Coordinate and document training seminars
- Develop and communicate Occupational Health and Safety systems
- Perform Job Hazard Analysis and create Standard Operating Procedures
- Promote a safe and healthy work environment and reduce lost time due to injury or illness
- Assist with special projects as required
- Enhance Maple Leaf’s profile as a responsible and caring company
- May work on weekends or irregular shifts during emergencies
What You’ll Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in occupational health and safety or related discipline, or 5+ years of experience
- Experience administering policies and legislative compliance
- Leadership experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in health and safety program delivery and management
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation; hazard recognition, assessment and control is an asset
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with union and management collaboratively
- Self-starter, proactive, able to work independently and in a team
- Transparent in dealing with others
- Strong PC and analytical skills
- Problem-solving skills
- Detail-oriented
