Job summary

A North American manufacturing company located in Dieppe is seeking a Health and Safety Manager to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and foster a strong safety culture. Responsibilities include conducting risk assessments, delivering training, managing health and safety programs, and overseeing Workers' Compensation claims. The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary education in occupational health and safety, alongside a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, ideally within the manufacturing and transportation sectors.

Job description

Reporting to the Director of Operations and Business Development, the Health and Safety Manager is a key player, and a highly supportive team member. The Health and Safety Specialist will play a critical role in ensuring and prioritizing the health and safety of all of our employees. The Health and Safety Specialist will maintain compliance with all legislation.

  • Post-secondary education in occupational health, health and safety, or other related fields
  • A minimum of 5 years of occupational health, health and safety, or other related job experience is preferred
  • Previous experience working for within manufacturing and/or transportation preferred
  • Previous experience working with or for an employment agency preferred
  • Multiple jurisdiction experience preferred

  • Acting as a Subject Matter Expert on related legislation/regulations and internal/corporate Health and Safety Policies
  • Provide Health and Safety related guidance and support to the Operations team
    • Discussing Health and Safety related matters with both customers and employees
    • Deliver training
    • Identify hazards
    • Conduct risk assessments (in partnership with Operations and our Customers)
    • Investigating injuries, incidents and implementing preventative measures (in partnership with Operations and our Customers)
  • Manage Intelex
    • Review daily to see if new incidents have been reported
    • Ensure all incidents have been entered into the system
    • Moving the incident along through the lifecycle
  • Investigate all occupational health and safety incidents involving Protrans employees (both hourly and salaried)
    • Full investigation in cooperation with Branch Managers and Customers
    • Reporting on findings
    • Suggesting improvements
  • Assist the implementation of hazard controls
    • Partner with Corporate Safety Manager
    • Work with Operations to partner with customer sites to improve and implement
  • Monthly audits to ensure all employee’s are completing required health and safety training
    • Pulling reports from the Applicant Tracking System
    • Reviewing the completed training in the various safety portals (SafetyHub and Carriers Edge)
    • Working collaboratively with Operations in any area that needs improvement
    • Adjusting safety training as required to meet legislative requirements
  • Monthly reporting to demonstrate where each Branch is at in terms of their Health and Safety compliance
  • Monthly reporting on the previous periods safety results including recommendations to improve
    • Ability to present in monthly Management meets
  • Support execution of customer safety audits
    • Reviewing any concerns that Operations brings forward
    • Participating in completing yearly safety audits at various customer locations
  • Assisting in the creation of onsite safety programs/trainings at existing customer locations, as well as with new customers as they are onboarded
    • Partnering with Operations to understand what is happening today, what needs to happen to make the onsite safety program/training best in class
  • Create monthly communications to inform and educate all our employee’s (both hourly and salaried) about a safety topic
    • Pull an active employee list from the Applicant Tracking System, and email the communication out to all hourly employees
    • Communicate to all salaried employees through our internal system to collect signatures
  • Help to administer Occupational Health and Safety tools, such as training databases, injury reporting processes
  • Maintain ownership and continuously improve safety policies and procedures
  • Oversee all Workers’ Compensation Board and Return to Work Claims
    • Completing all required WCB paperwork when a work related incident occurs
    • Submitting all required WCB paperwork to WCB
    • Assisting the Disability Case Manager as required
    • Assisting the Human Resources Manager as required
    • Assisting Operations as required
  • Research and participate in WCB Rebate Programs
  • If and when required, create and lead the Joint Health and Safety Committee for Protrans
  • Provide regular status reports to your manager and other stakeholders in regards to all Occupational Health and Safety initiatives
  • Participate in weekly team meetings to prioritize weekly initiatives/activities
  • Prioritize work based on team objectives
    • Prioritizing work around critical functions (highest risk first)
  • Communicate effectively with employees, customers, management, and other stakeholders
