Job description
Hardware Product Engineer - Construction IoT (Mid-Level)
About Brickeye

Brickeye leverages the power of data from construction to drive risk mitigation and productivity gains. Our platform provides real-time visibility, early risk detection, and smart automation that prevent costly damages and delays. From instant safety alerts to predictive analytics that help secure better insurance rates, we're making construction safer, more productive, and data-driven—all while maintaining enterprise-grade security and compliance.

The Challenge

Construction sites are chaotic environments where a single missed risk signal can mean millions in cost—delays, equipment damage, or worse—someone getting hurt.

At Brickeye, we're building an IoT-enabled technology that turns construction sites into smart, predictive environments. Our physical products are the foundation of this intelligence. We need devices that survive extreme conditions:

  • Operating flawlessly in -30°C to +60°C weather.
  • Maintaining power efficiency for multi-year battery life in the field.
  • Integrating diverse sensors (water, temp, pressure, flow) into a robust, deployable system.

We're looking for an engineer who can move seamlessly from designing a clean CAD model to creating a fully functional, field-ready Product with a stable firmware.

The Engineer We're Looking For

We’re seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer passionate about designing compact, ruggedized electronic products that merge form, function, and manufacturability. In this role, you’ll take ideas from sketches to fully validated assemblies — integrating plastics, metals, antennas, and small electronics into robust, production-ready devices for real-world use. If you’re energized by hands-on problem-solving, meticulous mechanical design, and building products that survive the outdoors and heavy use on construction sites, then this position is for you.

💡 Product-Centric Design DNA

  • Own the mechanical and industrial design of compact devices, from initial concept through to mass production.
  • Collaborate with electronics and RF engineers to integrate PCBs, antennas, batteries, and sensors into space-constrained housings.
  • Balance trade-offs between size, thermal management, environmental sealing, RF transparency, and manufacturability.
  • Lead the creation of 3D CAD models, proof-of-concept assemblies, and prototypes for evaluation, testing, and iteration.
  • Translate field and user feedback into practical design improvements for ruggedness, usability, and longevity.
  • Provide post-deployment support and technical guidance, occasionally engaging with field teams and customers during implementation and commissioning.
🔩 Electro-Mechanical Mastery
  • Expert in CAD design (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar) for developing enclosures, mounting mechanisms, and detailed production drawings.
  • Apply FEA and thermal simulation to validate product strength, deformation, and heat performance.
  • Select materials and manufacturing methods across injection-molded plastics, die-cast aluminum, and elastomeric seals.
  • Engineer enclosures to meet IP/NEMA environmental ratings (moisture, dust, vibration, and temperature resistance).
  • Develop mechanical test fixtures, tolerancing analyses, and DFM/DFA documentation.
  • Electronics & Electrical: Proficient understanding of PCB design for positioning, sizing and component orientation, as well as antenna integration during mechanical integration.
⚡ Technical Versatility
  • Rapidly prototype using 3D printing, CNC machining and manage design revisions based on hands-on evaluation.
  • Work with vendors and contract manufacturers to scale designs for tooling, production, and cost optimization.
  • Generate comprehensive mechanical BOMs, assembly drawings, and manufacturing specs.
  • Testing & Validation: Skilled in developing rigorous test plans and regulatory testing for environmental (temperature, ingress), electrical (EMI/EMC, safety), and functional validation.
  • Design and build test jigs and fixtures for sensor characterization and automated production testing.
  • IoT Connectivity: Experience working with wireless products
🚀 Startup Agility & Collaboration
  • Thrive in a cross-functional environment with electrical, firmware, and product teams.
  • Manage the mechanical design lifecycle independently — from concept sketches to validated production assemblies.
  • DFM/DFA Mindset: You design with Design for Manufacturing and Assembly in mind to ensure products are cost-effective and scalable from the first production run.
  • Manage the supply chain and coordinate with external vendors for component sourcing, quoting (RFQ), and manufacturing.
🤖 AI-First Mindset
  • Early adopter: You're already using AI tools (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini etc) to do what you couldn’t do before. You are excited more than ever on what you can now accomplish by using the latest AI tools
  • Productivity multiplier: You see AI as a force multiplier for engineering excellence, not a replacement for critical thinking
  • Continuous experimenter: You actively explore new AI tools and techniques, adapting them to solve real world challenges
  • Stay curious and proactive in exploring new materials, tooling approaches, and design automation practices.

Technical Stack & Requirements

Must-Have Experience:
  • 5+ years of end-to-end mechanical design experience for compact, multi-material electronic devices.
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or Mechatronics.

  • Experience with FEA, DFM, and tolerance analysis
  • Strong understanding of environmental sealing, materials science, and manufacturability.
  • Hands-on prototyping experience and comfort with mechanical testing equipment.
Strong Plus:
  • PCBA mechanical integration and familiar with injection molding, overmolding, die-casting processes.
  • Experience integrating RF modules, antennas, or other electronic elements into enclosures.
  • Knowledge of IP or NEMA certification processes for ruggedized devices.
  • Exposure to industrial design collaboration (appearance models, user ergonomics).
  • Comfort interfacing with CMs and fabrication vendors for volume production.
  • Active experience with cellular IoT (LTE-M/NB-IoT) and/or LoRaWAN module integration and certification.
  • Experience in a rapid prototyping environment (3D printing, CNC machining coordination).
  • Proficiency in Python for test automation, data analysis, or scripting for hardware validation.
What Sets You Apart

You're not just looking for another engineering job—you want to solve real problems that matter. You get excited about:

  • Seeing your designs transition from a 3D printed prototypes to a highly durable, mass-produced product.
  • Optimizing firmware to pull the last year of life out of a small battery.
