Job description

Position Summary

The Chief Mate is second in command aboard the vessel and must be capable of assuming full command should the captain become incapacitated. The captain relies heavily on the Chief Mate to supervise and coordinate day-to-day activities of the deck crew.

Main Responsibilities

  • With instruction and supervision from the captain, become familiar with the handling characteristics of the vessel (maneuvering, docking, anchoring, etc.) as well as the operation of critical systems (electronic navigation aids, steering, de-watering, safety apparatus, etc.).
  • Performs navigational watches while underway and safety / anchor / dock watches at times.
  • Overall in charge and responsible for safe conduct of vessel cargo operations including Loading / Unloading / Ballast-Deballast operations.
  • Assists the Captain with the maintenance of required logbooks according to established practice and in established formats.
  • Responsible for deck planned maintenance systems including Tackle book.
  • Directs and supervises all members of the deck department and ensures that each understands and performs their assigned duties adequately. Assists Captain with training and orientation of new crew members. Coordinates line-handling when coming to port, anchoring, skiff-launching and retrieval, deck maintenance and safety.
  • Participate in the design and execution of emergency drills, generally taking charge of on-scene response actions. Help ensure written drill reports are properly logged.
  • Routinely update scheduling and tasking information on the crew mess whiteboard, and pass-the-word when sudden changes need to be made.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Chief Mate license (Unlimited) issued by Transport Canada REQUIRED.
  • Master Mariner license will be an asset.
  • Marine Emergency Duties (MED) with respect to STCW basic safety; MED training with respect to proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats; MED in advanced firefighting; MED for senior officers; SEN II; ECDIS- Generic.
  • Marine Medicare / Marine Advanced First Aid
  • Specialized Oil Tanker Training certificate of proficiency (SOTT) with Transport Canada Level-2 Endorsement.
  • General Operator’s Certificate (GOC).
  • Bridge Resource Management training.
  • Certificate of Proficiency as a Ship Security Officer.
  • A valid Passport and Marine Medical.
  • A thorough understating and experience with various marine industry regulations including ISM code.
  • Experience as a Chief Mate of a tanker vessel equal to or greater than 3000 GRT.
  • Pilotage Certificates PM1 or 2 for Cornwall District, District-1, LO District, District-2.
  • Minimum 24 months of experience on a Oil tanker.
  • Experience in carriage of Bitumen (Asphalt) is an asset.
  • Dual Fuel (LNG) training as per IGF Code – Advanced
  • Eligible to enter the US
