Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility; therefore, continuous quality and safety improvement is essential in this role.

Under the supervision of the Manager or designate and as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse, Full Scope, performs assessments, plans and provides personal care, and executes nursing procedures. The LPN operates within the full scope of practice as per the Standards of Practice outlined by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, adhering to agency policies, standards, and unit protocols.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN.
  • Perinatal positions require either (a) completion of a perinatal education program plus breastfeeding course, or (b) at least 1 year of recent (within the last 2 years) acute perinatal experience. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within the past 2 years is also required.
  • MHSU positions require additional education as specified by BCCNM for practice involving Mental Health and/or Substance Use disorders.
  • Hip and Knee Clinic roles require two years of recent related surgical and preadmission clinic experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication with residents, families, colleagues, multidisciplinary team members, and the public.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Organizational skills to plan and implement care.
  • Knowledge and competencies to work at full scope, including medication administration, as required by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives.
  • Ability to operate relevant equipment.
  • Physical capability to perform duties of the position.
