Job description
Overview

Staff Lawyer at OKANAGAN THOMPSON LEGAL CLINIC is a full-time position. The Clinic provides free legal services and education to the Okanagan Thompson area with offices in Kamloops and Kelowna, operating with a trauma-informed, client-centered approach dedicated to removing barriers to justice for gender diverse individuals, Indigenous communities and other marginalized groups.

The Staff Lawyers will report to the Executive Director and join a team responsible for delivering free legal services in the Kelowna and Kamloops regions.

Responsibilities
  • Provide free legal services and advice; represent clients in the Kelowna and Kamloops region.
  • Conduct client intake and interviews; attend court; perform legal research.
  • Establish and conduct public legal education sessions, including by webinar.
  • Work in areas including human rights, employment, judicial reviews, small claims, debt claims, and other areas of law as needed.
Qualifications
  • Member of the Law Society of British Columbia or eligible for membership; must possess LL.B, JD or NCA.
  • Experience in a similar role with demonstrated knowledge of human rights law, employment law, and judicial reviews.
  • Immigration law experience is an asset; experience working with marginalized communities and familiarity with Clio are beneficial.
  • A valid BC driver’s license is an asset.
Compensation and Benefits

Compensation: $90,000 to $100,000 per year. Pension and health benefits are included.

Other Requirements
  • All successful candidates must obtain a Police Information Check (PIC) as a condition of employment (PIC is not required for the application; it will be required upon consideration for employment).
  • Positions are based on 35 hours per week, primarily Monday to Friday; occasional evenings and/or weekends may be required.
