Overview

Laboratory Technician 2 - Analytical Services in the Environmental Standards, Water and Waste Department. Designated work location: various/onsite. Position type: Permanent on a Temporary Basis – up to 12 months, Full-time. Hours of work: various shifts as operationally required, including weekends – 35 hours/week. Salary: $2,004.18 to $2,355.10 bi-weekly, per the Laboratory Technician 2 classification within the C.U.P.E. Collective Agreement. Employee group: C.U.P.E. Posting No.: 126355. Job Profile

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Supervisors, the Laboratory Technician 2 is responsible for sampling and performing standard analyses on water, wastewater and industrial waste samples, as well as field testing and report preparation.

Responsibilities
  • Obtain samples on a regular basis from various locations in the Department infrastructure, including wastewater collection, treatment and disposal, water supply and distribution, land drainage, and solid waste collection and disposal systems.
  • Perform standard analyses on wastewater, industrial waste, potable water, sludge, digester gas and air samples according to established procedures in laboratory manuals and safety policies.
  • Operate and calibrate basic or specialized equipment and instrumentation used in sampling and analytical procedures.
  • Install and operate automatic sampling equipment and maintain equipment through preventative maintenance and minor repairs as required.
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance, diagnostics and minor repairs to laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Input analytical and quality control data into the Laboratory Information Management System and 311, tabulate data, use statistical procedures, and represent data graphically as required.
  • Participate in field sampling and environmental monitoring programs.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed; report results clearly and write reports as required.
  • Train other staff in proper analytical techniques and procedures, as required.
  • Assure integrity of data by following quality assurance procedures, including participation in inter-laboratory quality assurance studies.
  • Order necessary supplies and reagents for area of responsibility.
  • Address public inquiries/concerns related to water quality as required.
  • Maintain laboratory vehicle in good operating condition with routine maintenance and repairs as required.
  • Participate in Safety Training and Safety Committee activities.
  • Ensure compliance with Worker’s Compensation, Human Rights, safety regulations and safe work practices.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the classification, as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school graduation or equivalent, plus completion of a recognized university/community college program in Science/Science Laboratory Technology (or equivalent) with at least three full courses (18 credit hours) in Chemistry.
  • Additional courses in quality assurance, statistics and instrumentation preferred.
  • Two years of previous acceptable laboratory experience and training.
  • General knowledge of computer software, such as Microsoft Access, Excel (statistics, charting) and Word.
  • Ability to use, or learn within two months of appointment, a computer for data entry, tabulation and retrieval, database queries and quality control charting using the Laboratory Information Management System and 311.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge and understanding of occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures applicable to the area of work.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels, external contacts and the public.
  • Education received outside of Canada must be comparable to Canadian minimum qualifications; official credential assessment may be required.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If a work permit is held, ensure it remains valid.
  • Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required at the candidate’s expense.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License and provide a driver’s license notice upon request.
  • Must be physically capable of performing all duties, including outdoor work in unfavourable weather conditions.
