CAD Railway Industries Ltd is a Quebec-based company with over 60 years of experience. We specialize in the repair, conversion, and refurbishment of railway rolling stock (freight cars and locomotives). Our workshops and offices are located in Montreal (Lachine) and Alberta (Caltrax banner).

Job Summary

The Locomotive Mechanical Engineer is responsible for diagnosing, designing, testing, and improving the mechanical systems of locomotives. This role plays a key part in troubleshooting, refurbishment, component integration, and the development of technical solutions in collaboration with internal teams and external partners. This position requires strong technical expertise, high attention to detail, and excellent teamwork skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Overhaul and Troubleshooting - Provide expertise in troubleshooting mechanical issues with locomotives, such as malfunctions in engines, compressors, cooling systems and trucks.
  • Identify problematic systems / parts to ascertain performance failures using diagnostic and fault-finding techniques.
  • Prepare documentation for the inspection, qualification and rebuild of locomotive systems.
  • Design and Development - Participate in the design of the integration of locomotive sub-systems and structure.
  • Develop schematics, diagrams, layouts, drawings and 3D models.
  • Testing - Plan tests on locomotives or their subsystems at suppliers' sites.
  • Documentation, instrumentation, and test coordination.
  • Ensure the integration of required standards into the design and execution of tests.
  • Design and test various specific test setups.
  • Provide technical expertise and analyze test results.
  • Write test reports and make relevant recommendations.
  • Ensure the quality of measurement and testing equipment.
  • Collaboration and Communication - Participate in meetings with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments and provide technical support.
  • Provide technical guidance to other team members.
  • Guide technicians toward solutions.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering;
  • Member of the OIQ;
  • Significant experience in the field of railway rolling stock or mass rail transit;
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft; AutoCAD Electrical
  • Ability to read with accuracy diesel engine manuals, locomotive schematics, service bulletins, maintenance instructions and other craft related documentation.
  • Ability to read and understand FRA and company rules, specifications and guidelines
  • Good organizational skills, attention to detail, and rigor;
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage priorities well;
  • Attention to detail, precision, analytical skills, autonomy, and good interpersonal skills;
  • Customer-oriented;
  • Excellent command of French and English, both oral and written.
