Household Hazardous Waste Operator
Public Works - Waste Management

Status: 1 Long Term Contract Full Time Position, duration: 13 months

Salary Range: $61,368 to $76,710 per annum plus benefits

Hiring Range: $61,368 to $69,039 per annum plus benefits

Work mode and Location: onsite at 1795 Quarry Drive, Caledon (Caledon CRC)

Hours of work: 35 hours per week

The role

Reporting to the Team Lead, Household Hazardous Waste, you will co-ordinate the receiving, categorizing, storing and shipping of Hazardous Waste in accordance with Regional policies and Provincial regulations.

  • The safe handling and storage of household hazardous waste to minimize detrimental effects on people and environment.
  • Test and identify household hazardous waste.
  • Understand the chemical properties and incompatibilities of waste.
  • Educate the public by answering all questions pertaining to household hazardous waste and other waste management programs and initiatives.
  • Maintain an accurate accounting system of waste collection activitiesto ensure compliance with the Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECAs), Certificates of Approval (C of As) and ministry of Environment (MOE) regulations.
  • Assume the role of "Incident Commander" provide leadership and implement emergency procedures when required.
  • Act as a mentor with our Summer Student and Coop program.
What the role requires
  • Successful completion of a degree/diploma in Chemistry, Environmental or related field combined with a minimum of one (1) year experience handling hazardous material.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, WHMIS and Regulation 347 of the Environmental Protection Act.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Excel.
  • Strong analytical skills and laboratory experience to test and identify chemical waste.
  • Valid class “G” license in good standing and daily access to a vehicle.
  • A satisfactory Level 1 Criminal Record Check obtained directly from a police station (third-party background checks will not be accepted).
