Job description

The Municipality of North Cowichan (population 31,900) is located in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Southern Vancouver Island, between Nanaimo and Victoria. This position works out of the North Cowichan-Duncan RCMP Detachment. Reporting to the Manager, RCMP Support Services, the successful candidate will be required to work 12‑hour shifts, including weekends and evenings, and will be responsible for overall supervision of prisoners while in custody. Assisting regular members in the booking‑in and release of all prisoners. Preparing and maintaining related forms and reports. Assist with and facilitate communications for bail hearings and lawyers. This position may be exposed to graphic and explicit subject matter and may be required to testify in court. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time.

Required Skills, Qualifications and Abilities
  1. Completion of Grade 12.
  2. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence; a satisfactory current driver's abstract will be required.
  3. Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  4. Considerable knowledge of and demonstrated skills in computer word processing applications and equipment.
  5. Minimum typing speed of 40 wpm.
  6. Experience in law enforcement, mental health or emergency response.
  7. Strong knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, composition, and commonly used RCMP terminology, and of office practices and procedures.
  8. Ability to problem‑solve.
  9. Ability to multi‑task in demanding situations.
  10. Independence of judgement and capability of working under minimal supervision.
  11. Ability to pass and maintain security clearance levels as established by the RCMP.
  12. Ability to obtain and maintain certificates in first aid and CPR (Level 1).
  13. The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
