Overview

FO3 Forester 3 — Term/full-time — Term ends September 2026. Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures. Forestry and Peatlands, Resource Stewardship. Winnipeg, MB. Advertisement Number: 44341. Salary: FO3 $82,790.00 - $107,165.00 per year. Closing Date: October 13, 2025.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • A degree in Forestry, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or Engineering, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Experience applying statistical or quantitative methods to biological, environmental, or resource data (e.g., forest growth, population modeling, environmental simulations, etc.)
  • Experience developing, adapting, or applying predictive models, simulation, or forecasting tools for natural or environmental systems
  • Experience managing complex databases, including data integration and quality control
  • Experience using computer programming and statistical data analysis software such as SAS, R, Python or similar tools
  • Experience using ArcGIS or similar spatial technology
  • Knowledge of mensuration techniques, quantitative data collection methods, or simulation approaches related to biological or environmental systems (e.g., forest mensuration, ecological sampling, population dynamics, etc.)
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong written communication skills including technical reports, briefings
  • Experience working with tight timelines and multiple deadlines

Desired:

  • Experience with machine learning and or deep learning techniques, including model development, improvement, and implementation
  • Knowledge of Forestry-related Acts and Regulations
  • Experience working with Indigenous nations
Duties

The position ensures that the volume and yield data used to determine sustainability incorporates the current science and accounts for the influence of climate change. Assists in the development of silvicultural ground rules, treatment and response pathways and participates in the development of all Forest Lands Inventories.

  • Develop, implement and maintain growth and yield models used for predicting long-range forest yields
  • Update and maintain data for yield quotations and predictions, and defend model results and requirements for alternatives. Maintaining the provincial Permanent Sample Plot (PSP) and Temporary Sample Plot (TSP) data bases, ensuring that information from other sources such as Ecosite work and National Forest Inventory can and is incorporated as necessary
  • Develop stand/species mortality models and research sample plot data used to quantify silviculture treatments effects
  • Develop and implement quality control standards. Establishing an implementing a provincial strategy and maintaining a database on design enhancements, developing industrial protocols for data sharing and exchange, and volume sampling program
