Overview

Interior Health (IH) is seeking a dynamic student to work in its Environmental Sustainability portfolio. This role will be based out of Kelowna Warehouse (Reids) in Kelowna, BC. This is a six-month term position, from approximately October 2025 to March 31, 2026.

The Environmental Sustainability team promotes and leads environmental initiatives at Interior Health to ensure our healthcare service delivery continues to be sustainable. At IH, we focus on identifying opportunities within our sphere of influence which can be implemented to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and our negative impact on the environment. Environmental Sustainability is a shared responsibility across IH, and applies to all portfolios and functional areas, supported by the Environmental Sustainability Manager.

What will you work on?

The student will provide assistance to the Manager of Environmental Sustainability on a research project, to identify and implement environmental sustainability improvements in Digital Health. The Environmental Sustainability team promotes and leads environmental initiatives at Interior Health to ensure our health-care service delivery continues to be sustainable. At IH, we focus on identifying opportunities within our sphere of influence which can be implemented to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and negative impacts on the environment. Environmental Sustainability is a shared responsibility across IH, and applies to all portfolios and functional areas, supported by the Environmental Sustainability team. This is a six-month term position, from approximately October to March 2026.

The objective of the internship placement will be to improve environmental sustainability practices within services offered through Digital Health. The applicant will need skills in applying sustainability and scientific concepts to track and quantify greenhouse gas emissions, waste and energy consumption and cost savings opportunities. To implement environmental sustainability improvements, the student will also need to market new concepts and work with partners to track and report data. This component of the role will require business operations, marketing and communications skills. Towards the end of the term, the role will lead the writing of an “opportunity investigation” report, utilizing engineering and business elements of technical writing, data analysis and reporting. This report will also enhance the student’s ability to communicate with internal partners to determine the potential impact across the organization. Additionally, the student will be given the opportunity to present the results of their findings to the partners involved, this will be an opportunity to improve their communication and public speaking skills.

Typical Duties And Responsibilities
  • Support planning initiatives related to environmental sustainability and employee engagement.
  • Conduct research, data analysis, and reporting on environmental sustainability projects.
  • Develop staff education and engagement campaigns. Provide assistance to implement behaviour modification programs to reduce environmental impacts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
