Job description
Overview

Parkland School Division (PSD) has a Temporary Part-Time (0.857 FTE) Education Assistant Certified position available at Duffield School in Duffield, Alberta. PSD serves over 12,000 students across 23 sites and values purposeful, essential, relevant, authentic and responsive learning with trustworthy relationships that promote Student Success & Well-being.

EXISTING PERMANENT EMPLOYEES: As an existing CUPE employee you are eligible to apply and, if successful, you will maintain permanent status. At the conclusion of the temporary position, you will be returned to the same or similar position (and at the same location, if possible) as you were previously in.

Function and Purpose of Position

Educational Assistants II (EA II) assist teachers with instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom and with other school activities. EA II’s work as members of the school and student support teams. The minimum mandatory educational requirement is an Educational Assistant Certificate or comparable education. EA II’s may:

  • Work under the supervision of one teacher or several teachers
  • Work independently with students or in the classroom with the teacher
  • Work with a particular special needs student or a group of students within a class or in a special program
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Perform clerical tasks in the classroom or school

The EA II provides routine instructional support under the direction of the teacher, follows an individually prescribed learning program, and may engage in team planning and one-on-one work with students. This role includes routine recording, basic charting and logging of observations. EA II may provide personal care to students.

Instructional Support
  • Provide assistance in all curriculum areas, one-on-one or in small groups as directed by the teacher
  • Organize notebooks, timetables, agendas and lockers
  • Scribe notes from the board, scribe and read exams for students as required
  • Modify and adapt programs for individual students as directed by the classroom teacher
  • Assist in implementing Individual Program Plan (IPP) goals and adaptive devices
  • Assist students with computer access and software
  • Support communication with peers and adults (e.g., American Sign Language, assistive tech devices)
  • Apply foundational knowledge about First Nations, Métis and Inuit for the benefit of all students
Behaviour
  • Observe, chart and monitor individual student progress and behavior under the teacher’s direction
  • Support a safe environment using de-escalation strategies and non-violent intervention techniques
  • Provide behavioral management assistance for students with behavioural disorders using predetermined non-aversive methods
  • Assist with classroom discipline as needed
Student Assistance and Personal Care
  • Assist with walking and personal care/hygiene (including food preparation, dressing, grooming, toileting)
  • Provide feeding assistance and handle medically fragile students as required
  • Operate assistive devices and specialized equipment to support instruction
  • Provide and monitor medical and personal care activities as needed
  • Assist with adaptive physical education, mobility, and life skills development
Speech/Occupational/Physical Therapy
  • Assist students with speech-language difficulties as directed
  • Update progress for Individual Program Plans; assist with physiotherapy and therapy team liaising
Communication and Reporting
  • Communicate health and behaviors observations to the teacher
  • Maintain medication data and participate in student team conferences
  • Maintain a home-school communication log as directed
Preparation and Supervision
  • Organize materials, prepare displays, and assist in marking and filing
  • Prepare, set up and dismantle displays and work areas
  • Supervise students during activities and field trips; assist with bus boarding/disembarking
Community Living, Vocational Skills and Personal Development
  • Travel with students to job placements and community outings; support integration into regular classrooms
  • Help develop social skills and life skills; support recreation activities
  • Support self-esteem and participation in classroom activities
  • Administer first aid as required and encourage routine personal care
Education and Experience

a) Education
i) High School Diploma
ii) Teacher Assistant Certificate/Educational Assistant Certificate
ii) Nonviolent Crisis Intervention and First Aid Certificate (asset)
iv) Related coursework to special needs

b) Experience
i) Training and experience with children with challenging behaviors; strong technology skills; ability to build relationships; team player

Decision Making

EAs make decisions to support instructional plan implementation as directed by the teacher, including task sequencing, supervision of activities, and setup of instructional displays.

Working with Others

Typical contacts include: school staff, other schools, daily communication with students, and reporting observations to the teacher. Work is performed under supervision with directions provided during the work process.

Physical Demands

Work may involve lifting up to 35 lbs one-person and up to 50 lbs with assistance; use of mechanical lifts for heavier cases; assist with transfers and movement, kneeling, standing, and other positions to support student needs.

Working Conditions

Indoors except when supervising outdoors or on field trips. Ten-month contract; summer break not paid. Hours are position-specific; may require a personal vehicle.

Additional Information

Educational Assistants must respect confidentiality and personal integrity of students, parents, teachers and staff. This position requires an original copy of a current clean criminal record check with vulnerable sector and an original copy of a child intervention record check. This position is covered by the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 5543.

Hours and Pay

Hours: 30 hours/week (Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 2:30 pm)

Pay: EA Certified: $25.35 – $28.39/hr (Pay Group 3); EA Non-Certified: $24.17 – $26.98/hr (Pay Group 2)
