Overview
Main Purpose of the Job
The Program Supervisor is responsible for supporting high-quality early learning and childcare programming across the center. This role provides direct leadership to classroom staff, ensures daily operational stability, and maintains compliance with Alberta’s licensing requirements—including staff attendance, scheduling, and child-to-staff ratios.
The Program Supervisor acts as a bridge between classroom educators and the Director, ensuring that both program quality and operational standards are consistently met.
Responsibilities
A. Program & Curriculum Leadership
- Support educators in planning and implementing developmentally appropriate, play-based learning experiences.
- Ensure all classroom environments follow the center’s philosophy, policies, and Alberta Flightor relevant curriculum guidelines.
- Monitor programming for consistency, quality, and appropriateness.
- Model best practices in child development, guidance, and engagement.
B. Staff Support, Coaching & Conduct
- Provide guidance, mentorship, and ongoing feedback to educators.
- Ensure staff are following all center policies, routines, and expectations.
- Address minor performance issues directly and escalate concerns to the Director.
- Support onboarding and training of new staff.
- Promote a positive, professional team culture centered on respect and collaboration.
C. Staffing, Attendance & Ratio Compliance (Required per your request)
The Program Supervisor is responsible for ensuring:
Attendance & Scheduling
- Staff arrive on time and adhere to their scheduled shifts.
- Absences, late arrivals, or schedule deviations are reported immediately to the Director.
- Staff follow proper break procedures and maintain required classroom coverage at all times.
- Daily attendance logs are completed and cross-checked.
Ratio Management
- Child-to-staff ratios are maintained at all times across all rooms.
- Staff are redistributed as needed to maintain compliance and safety.
- Any ratio risks or emergencies are reported immediately to the Director.
- Classroom transitions (drop-off, nap, outdoor play, end of day) remain fully supervised.
Scheduling Corrections
- Work with the Director to identify recurring lateness, attendance issues, or staffing gaps.
- Assist in temporary schedule adjustments to maintain program operation.
D. Licensing, Health & Safety Compliance
- Ensure classrooms follow Alberta Licensing ratios, health standards, and safety procedures.
- Conduct regular checks for hazards, cleanliness, and proper documentation.
- Ensure staff maintain appropriate supervision practices at all times.
- Assist with incident reports and maintain accurate records.
- Support emergency drills and safety protocol training.
E. Communication & Administration
- Maintain clear communication with the Director about classroom needs, concerns, or operational issues.
- Support family communication when appropriate and refer escalations to the Director.
- Assist with documentation, daily reports, and regulatory paperwork.
- Attend leadership meetings and participate in planning initiatives.
Qualifications
- Alberta Child Development Supervisor Certification (formerly Level 3).
- Minimum 2 years childcare experience (supervisory experience preferred).
- Strong understanding of Flight curriculum, child development, and licensing standards.
- Effective communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to mentor staff while maintaining professionalism and consistency.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
Working Conditions
- Fast-paced early learning environment.

- Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs and participate in classroom physical activities.
- May require occasional overtime or schedule adjustments to maintain ratios.
Physical Requirements
- Stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the day.
- Sit on the floor, engage at child level, and transition between positions.
- Lift and carry up to 30 lbs (children, equipment, materials).
- Respond quickly in emergencies, including running or lifting.
- Supervise indoor and outdoor play in various weather conditions.
- Maintain stamina in a busy, noisy childcare environment.
- Use fine motor skills for writing, documentation, and digital tools.
