Job summary

A Durham Region educational institution is seeking a Dedicated ASL Interpreter to facilitate communication between D/deaf or hard of hearing students and their peers. This role includes providing interpretation in various school settings, collaborating with the educational team, and participating in professional development. The successful candidate will have a recognized interpreter training program qualification and at least 1-2 years of field experience. This is a 35 hour per week, permanent position that follows the school calendar, requiring reliable transportation for different school locations.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 1-2 years field experience required.
  • Completion of an accredited interpreter training program or equivalent.
  • Current First aid and CPR preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide sign language interpretation in classrooms and other school settings.
  • Facilitate the integration of D/deaf students with their peers.
  • Document and share strategies for student learning.

Skills

Fluent use of ASL
Knowledge of D/deaf/hard of hearing culture
Strong organizational skills
Effective communication

Education

Completion of Secondary School Graduation Diploma
Community college diploma or university degree from an accredited interpreter training program
