WestCana is looking for an experienced Cook with a passion for the elderly to join one of our teams to support our residents in Long Term Care.

(WestCana) Job Title: Cooks (NOC 63200) Location of Work: 4108 Norfolk St, Burnaby BC V5G 0B4 Term of Employment: Permanent Full-time Language of Work: English Start Date: October 3, 2025 Vacancies: 1 Full-time Shifts: Friday - Saturday: 5:30am - 1:30pm & Sunday - Monday: 10am - 6pm (37.5 hours per week) Wages: $28.01 per hour

Cooks Must Haves :

  • Formal culinary training or certification, acquired from a culinary school or a related educational institution.
  • A minimum of one year of experience as a cook in a long-term care setting.
  • Extensive experience (2+ years) in a volume food preparation environment.
  • Holds and maintains valid Food Safe Level 1 Certification.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP).
  • Holds and maintains valid certification in Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
  • A negative TB test or chest x-ray within the last six months or ability to pass TB clearance documents.
  • Successfully clears and maintains, as required by company and facility, an appropriate background / criminal record check in accordance with licensing regulations; Re-submits such as required or every five years.
  • Provide signed annual mandatory declaration of criminal records.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both written and verbal.

Cooks Responsibilities :

  • Prepare meals that meet or exceed the quality, taste, and presentation expectations of residents, families, and clients.
  • Plan and oversee daily menus and special events, ensuring dietary needs are met within approved budgets.
  • Collaborate with the manager to purchase cost-effective, high-quality ingredients.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and scheduling for kitchen staff, including orientation and task assignments.
  • Maintain facility and company quality standards, including special dietary requirements.
  • Implement inventory control systems to reduce waste and maximize savings.
  • Monitor resident satisfaction and communicate feedback to the leadership team.
  • Support and promote sustainability practices to reduce environmental impact.
  • Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and sanitation standards (e.g., Community Care Facility Act, WHMIS, WCB).
  • Participate in fire and emergency drills and apply knowledge of emergency procedures.
  • Promote and enforce workplace safety, reporting hazards, incidents, or unsafe practices.
  • Use equipment and personal protective equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Ensure adherence to infection control practices and provide training to staff as needed.
