Position Overview
The Controller is a key leader in the financial operations of Legacy Equipment Rentals, responsible for accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and proactive cash flow management. This role also provides overall administration of the company's rental software system, serving as the go-to resource for system support and optimization. With a new rental software system implementation upcoming, the Controller will act as business lead and primary liaison between internal teams and the software provider.
The Controller combines technical accounting expertise, systems knowledge, and leadership skills with a collaborative approach to problem-solving. They work closely with senior leadership, operations, and external partners to ensure sound financial practices, compliance, and business efficiency.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The following responsibilities and accountabilities are the essential functions of this job:
Financial Reporting and Management
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Provide financial analysis, forecasting, and reporting to support decision-making.
- Maintain and monitor budgets, ensuring variances are investigated and reported.
- Manage cash flow, including forecasting, monitoring balances, and optimizing working capital.
- Lead asset lifecycle reporting, including acquisition, utilization, depreciation, and sale.
General Accounting and Month-End Close
- Oversee preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations.
- Maintain accuracy of the general ledger and chart of accounts.
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring deadlines are met.
- Ensure compliance with Canadian accounting standards, GST, PST, payroll remittances, and other regulatory requirements.
Systems Administration and Optimization
- Lead administration and optimization of the company's rental software system.
- Act as business lead for the upcoming system implementation, coordinating between operations, finance, and the software vendor.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for system questions, troubleshooting, and training.
- Ensure master data accuracy and integrity across financial and rental systems.
Accounts Receivable, Payable and Transactional Oversight
- Oversee AR, AP, and billing functions to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Review aging reports, monitor collections, and support resolution of overdue accounts.
- Ensure vendor invoices and payments are properly authorized and processed.
- Supervise reconciliation of bank deposits, EFTs, credit cards, and other receipts.
- Support rebate, lease, and fuel billing reconciliation as required.
Leadership and Team Development
- Lead and mentor accounting staff (1 direct report)
- Promote professional growth, cross-training, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate across departments to ensure financial policies and procedures are understood and followed.
Compliance and HSEQ
- Ensure compliance with HSEQ standards and organizational policies.
- Support annual audit processes and maintain documentation readiness.
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies as required.

Technical Competencies
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls.
- Advanced proficiency in ERP and rental management systems
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and interpretation of financial data abilities
- Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Education and Experience
- CPA designation (required or in progress), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles.
- Experience in equipment rental, construction, or other asset-intensive industries is an asset
- Demonstrated experience with ERP or rental software systems, including leading implementation, employee training and process optimization.
