Job Description

Description:

Shared Health is seeking motivated individuals to fill the role of Flex Attending for Children’s Hospital. This role will primarily consist of shifts based in Children’s Emergency (CHED) in the evening and overnight hours seven days/week, with occasional support provided during daytime hours.

Duties on shift include:

  • Assuming primary responsibility for attending and leading pediatric Code Blue events throughout Health Sciences Centre
  • Providing support to the pediatric resident teams for acutely deteriorating pediatric inpatients
  • Providing independent clinical care of CHED patients without the responsibility to lead resuscitations or supervise or teach learners unless desired by candidate. CHED is staffed 24/7 by Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) physicians who are always available to review cases or assume responsibility for patients when needed.
  • Staffing shifts in the CHED Minor Treatment Area when needed. This role consists of clinical care of lower-acuity patients without Code Blue or inpatient ward coverage.

The role of Flex Attending requires completion of residency training in Pediatrics. Flex Attendings are part of the Children’s Emergency team and welcome to participate in all Continuing Medical Education opportunities offered by CHED, including Acute Care Skills Days and semi-monthly virtual CME sessions. The Flex Attending will be supported in maintenance of airway and resuscitation skills for resuscitation events occurring outside of CHED.

The HSC Winnipeg Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient pediatric care, including general pediatrics and all pediatric subspecialties. As the only children’s hospital in Manitoba, the centre provides care for pediatric patients from throughout Manitoba, northwestern Ontario, and the Kivalliq region of Nunavut. A dedicated Children’s Emergency Department sees approximately 50,000 children and adolescents annually, with patients arriving from both local and remote areas as well as by referral from other regional sites.

Requirements for Flex Attending position:

  • Certification in Pediatrics, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or eligibility, if within the first three years of practice)
  • Eligibility for specialty registration and licensure with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Manitoba
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support
  • Competence in pediatric airway management and leadership of pediatric Code Blue events
  • Skills in pediatric procedural sedation considered an asset but not required

Compensation:

Remuneration occurs via an alternate funding arrangement and is paid at a generous fixed hourly rate. No fee-for-service billing, shadow or otherwise, is required or allowed.

The physician will be considered an independent contractor and thus responsible for all professional and medical liability, income tax liability, and any other liability or business expenses arising from professional work associated with this role. Benefits such as life and disability insurance, dental coverage, supplementary health coverage, CME allowance, vacation pay, and pension are not provided for contractor positions.
