Job description
Overview

Duties: The Chair of the Practical Nursing program is responsible for the overall coordination of the program and will support faculty and students in this area. Special areas of responsibility will include administration, budgets and budget planning, FTE tracking, advertising and publicity, student certificates, job postings, auxiliary appointments and appointment forms, chairing department meetings, timetabling, managing student intake and monitoring of students, managing referrals of students. Coordinating program evaluations, new program development, curriculum development and professional development activities. Participate in program, faculty, and institutional committees as required. Student contact, recruitment, interview and selection of prospective students as required, preparing student reports and monitoring student progress on an ongoing basis, handling student inquiries and interviews regarding the courses coordinated. Dealing with student performance contracts. Liaison with local industry, sponsoring agents, Advising, Counseling, Registration and Financial Aid. Ensuring recording of grades, reports and certificates.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an appropriately accredited institution, with current practicing BC College of Nursing Professionals membership in good standing;
  • the BC Provincial Instructor Diploma, or its equivalent, completed or in progress (maximum two years to completion) from an accredited institution;
  • a minimum of five years recent medical, surgical and gerontological nursing experience;
  • familiar with practice settings in central Vancouver Island communities, including private and public residential care and acute care;
  • responsive to a diverse student population;
  • a solid understanding of the scope and role of LPNs in the health care system;
  • Proficiency with the application and integration of information technology.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural teachings.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference will be given to BCGEU faculty members within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Human Services.
  • Master's degree in nursing or related field from an appropriately accredited institution;
  • experience teaching adults in a post-secondary setting;
  • familiarity with learning management systems (D2L) in an educational setting.
