The Role

The Advisor, Client & Business Development (Montréal) is a key member of Bennett Jones’ national Client & Business Development Team. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Client & Business Development, and working with the Local Managing Partner and other leaders in the Montréal office, this individual acts as a strategic advisor to help identify and pursue opportunities for revenue generation and brand awareness in the Quebec market.

The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of the Montréal business and legal community and its major industries and can execute a sales strategy, including planning, prospecting and proposal opportunities. The role includes planning and developing targeted communications and thought leadership to highlight our market expertise, and assessing high-value client experience initiatives, leveraging the national Client & Business Development team where appropriate. The individual should be able to operate autonomously, synthesizing the firm’s needs and objectives with those of the Local Managing Partner and lawyers to deliver differentiated, client-focused business development, marketing and profile-building initiatives.

Responsibilities

Business Development & Pursuits

  • Support Montréal lawyers and practice teams with business development planning and execution, including identification and pursuit of opportunities in the Quebec market
  • With the Proposals & Pursuits team nationally, assist with French-language submissions; lead the development, writing and editing of proposals, positioning decks and other marketing materials, including articulating how we sell our Quebec capabilities nationally to clients
  • Ensure the Montréal office and its lawyers participate in broader firm initiatives, including content development, Industry Teams, key client teams and other initiatives; socialize Montréal-specific initiatives to maximize national resources
  • With the Local Managing Partner and Montréal leadership, oversee the Montréal office business development budget and support initiatives that drive collaboration, client engagement, growth, recruitment and retention

Profile Building & Other Key Tasks

  • Develop understanding of Montréal lawyers’ U.S. and international referral relationships; coordinate outreach and maximize these relationships
  • Identify and coordinate local events, client seminars, industry sponsorships, membership, and other strategic initiatives; provide required logistical support
  • Identify and execute opportunities to build brand awareness and client loyalty through speaking, publishing or media opportunities; liaise with Montréal media and PR, guiding high-value media opportunities with national involvement as needed
  • Ensure client contact and activity information is tracked in the firm CRM (InterAction) and client experience is captured in the Firm’s systems (Foundation)
  • Work with Translation and external providers to optimize French translation and cross-office information sharing
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Business, Communications, PR or related field
  • 7+ years’ experience in business, marketing, or sales in a professional services environment; law firm experience is a strong asset
  • Strong understanding of the Montréal business environment and surrounding areas
  • Fully bilingual in French and English, with ability to draft compelling proposal content in French
  • Ability to lead in a hybrid office environment, exercising good judgment on autonomous vs. collaborative work
  • Strong communications and analytical skills; able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent client service and diplomacy; capable of managing competing priorities and delivering quality work under tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint; ability to learn CRM and project management software
