Job Purpose
Guide reactor engineering responsibilities throughout the planning and execution of core management activities, core design, and reactivity management for the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP). Implement fuel handling, inspection, and storage plans in accordance with regulatory requirements, operating policies, nuclear safety standards, industrial safety, and environmental protection to achieve overall business performance objectives.
Key Activities, Responsibilities & Accountability
Activity:
Reactor Engineering (RE)
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
• Carry out reactor design changes and support the maintenance of the design basis, margin management, design process, configuration management, and output documents.
• Provide technical support and troubleshooting as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Core Protection Calculator (CPC)/Core Operating Limit Supervisory System (COLSS) to ensure safe and reliable operations.
• Review and evaluate Low Power Physics Test (LPPT) and Power Ascension Test (PAT) results, analyzing actionable recommendations.
• Guide Main Control Room (MCR) operators during startup, shutdown, and power evolutions to ensure safety.
• Ensure core reactivity changes and estimate cycle schemes, providing recommendations related to results.
• Develop Reactivity Management (RM) strategies for power evolutions such as startups, shutdowns, and transients.
• Analyze core performance data and liaise with Fuel designers to incorporate findings into core design and safety analysis.
• Review and recommend improvements based on Reload Safety and Licensing Checklists (RSLC) and Reload Safety Evaluation Reports (RSER).
• Guide verification and validation (V&V) of fuel vendor-delivered core designs, including safety evaluations.
• Participate in core Loading Pattern (LP) initialization meetings, providing recommendations for optimized reload cycles.
• Review and implement revisions of Nuclear Design Reports (NDR) and operational support documents.
• Evaluate reload core design risks and provide independent recommendations.
• Assess the sensitivity of In-Core neutron Instrumentation (ICI) and Control Element Assemblies (CEA) degradation.
• Oversee development of vessel fluence surveillance calculations.
• Liaise with Licensing to resolve Requests for Additional Information (RAI) and Areas for Improvement (AFIs).
• Develop and apply technical solutions to resolve potential issues, requiring creative and analytical expertise.
• Ensure compliance with industrial codes, standards, and departmental procedures.
Fuel Management (FM)
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
• Lead fuel inspection activities, resolving issues to ensure integrity and safety.
• Oversee fuel receipt, loading, handling, and troubleshooting during campaigns.
• Develop core loading sequences for operational and safety excellence.
• Oversee fuel fabrication processes for compliance.
• Manage Failed Fuel Action Plans and Foreign Material Exclusion (FME) activities.
Fuel Integrity Monitoring
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
• Analyze fuel reliability, including radioactivity levels, to predict defects and ensure safety.
Staff Training and Qualification
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
• Participate in technical training programs.
• Oversee development and delivery of JIT training for criticality, LPPT, and PAT.
• Provide feedback to improve training effectiveness and staff performance evaluation.
The incumbent is expected to perform activities as per attachments 4 & 5 in the Job Description procedure, covering Health, Safety and Environment, Security, Business Continuity, People Management, and Quality Management.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Engineering or related Science.
• 8 years of relevant experience, including 1 year in Nuclear Power Plant engineering.
• Alternatively, a Master’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering or Physics with 15 years of relevant experience.
• Experience with APR-1400, OPR-1000, or similar plants.
